Detailed explanation of Chinese toon seedling cultivation techniques, teaching you how to grow robust seedlings
Spring is the propagation period for Chinese toon. In recent years, the market demand for Chinese toon has been growing, and besides being edible, it is also an excellent tree species for landscaping. So do you know how to grow Chinese toon seedlings? Let's take a look together.

1. Seed soaking and germination
First, try to choose fresh seeds suitable for local planting. After selecting the seeds, they need to be soaked and pregerminated. The method varies depending on production conditions. If conditions are poor, pour the seeds into 30-40 degree warm water, soaking while pouring. When the water temperature drops to 25 degrees, replace with fresh warm water and rub-wash the seeds. After washing clean, replace with warm water and soak for 12 hours. Then remove the seeds, air-dry the moisture, mix them evenly with wet sand, and place in a greenhouse for germination. The greenhouse temperature must be maintained at around 25 degrees. After one week, when one-third of the seeds have sprouted white, they can be sown.
2. Sowing at the appropriate time
Chinese toon prefers a warm environment and is relatively sensitive to low temperatures. The general temperature for bud break is 8-12 degrees, and it can grow normally in environments above 14 degrees. Therefore, the suitable sowing period is generally March to April. If the method of sowing with plastic film covering is used, sowing can be appropriately advanced. When sowing, choose a plot with loose, fertile soil and sufficient sunlight. First water thoroughly to saturate the soil, then rake it level in time. Open furrows at a row spacing of 25×30 cm, with a furrow width of 5-6 cm. The general sowing rate is 3-4 kg per mu, ensuring about 15,000 seedlings per mu.
3. Seedling stage management
After sowing, if there is no plastic film covering, the seedlings generally break through the soil in one week and reach full emergence in half a month. If plastic film covering is used, emergence can be accelerated, but be careful of high temperatures burning the seedlings, so after the seedlings emerge, the film should be broken open in time and the film openings pressed firmly. After emergence, the seedling root system is not well developed, and with shallow soil covering, they are vulnerable to water shortage and low temperatures. Therefore, water once in time at the three-leaf stage, preferably with warm water. When the seedlings grow to more than 5 cm, appropriately reduce the amount of watering, and pay attention to intertillage and weeding. When they grow to 4-5 leaves, thin the seedlings. After thinning, strengthen fertilizer and water management to cultivate strong seedlings. Summer is the period of vigorous growth for Chinese toon. At this time, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer in combination with watering, along with foliar fertilizer, to promote lignification of the seedlings, improve cold resistance, and make the young buds plump.
