Management Techniques for Oyster Mushroom During the Spawn-Running Period

The period from spawning to the emergence of fruiting bodies is called the spawn-running period. The quality of management techniques during this stage determines whether the oyster mushroom mycelium can establish vigorous growth in the substrate, and it is the key period for obtaining high quality and high yield. So how should the spawn-running period of oyster mushrooms be managed? Follow the editor to take a look at the detailed introduction below.

1. Strictly Control Light

During the spawn-running period, avoid light as much as possible, especially strong light exposure, which is not allowed. Many growers currently take an indifferent attitude toward this, which is neither scientific nor extremely detrimental to oyster mushroom spawn running. If oyster mushrooms receive prolonged light stimulation during the spawn-running period, the bags will begin to form primordia as soon as spawn running is complete, making it impossible to control the fruiting time. The correct approach is to block light immediately after spawning. Except when entering to observe and turn the bags, no light should enter the mushroom shed at other times.

2. Temperature and Humidity Control

The suitable temperature for mycelium is 25 degrees. If spawn running occurs during a low-temperature season, a stove can be used to raise the temperature. When conditions are poor, a black plastic film or shade net can be hung above the inside of the shed. On clear days, remove the straw curtains to raise the temperature inside the shed. However, direct sunlight must not fall on the spawn bags. If conditions permit, a water-temperature air conditioner can be installed, which can function throughout all four seasons. Air humidity has a major effect on spawn running and must be handled carefully. For example, during spring spawn running, the climate is dry, so humidity should be increased, generally to about 70%. In summer, when it rains for long periods and humidity is high, humidity needs to be reduced by harvesting to ensure normal spawn running.

3. Reasonable Ventilation

Mycelium requires a small amount of oxygen during growth, and slight ventilation can meet its needs. However, pay attention to the temperature exchange inside and outside the mushroom shed. When the temperature difference is too large, an appropriate ventilation time should be considered. For example, during summer spawn running, ventilation should be chosen at night as much as possible, while during low-temperature seasons it should be done at noon, avoiding high-temperature and low-temperature periods as much as possible.

4. Prevent Pests and Diseases

Throughout the entire spawn-running period of oyster mushrooms, spray a solution of Bingqu Wuzong or Saibai 09 about once every 5 days. This is to prevent the occurrence of miscellaneous bacteria and diseases. Once contaminated spawn bags are found, promptly move them out of the arched shed to a separate production area. Especially in spring, frequently spray pyrethroid substances to repel and kill pests.
