Analysis of Carrot Sowing Time and Key Methods

Key Points for Sowing Carrots

The low emergence rate after sowing carrots is because the sowing work was not done well. Some preparatory work needs to be done before sowing, and after sowing, appropriate adjustments are also needed, so that the emergence rate will be high. Let's take a look at some of the more important aspects of sowing carrots.

1. Choose the right time

Timing is very important; only with the right time can the seeds survive at a suitable temperature. The carrot growing period is about two months, and during this period it needs relatively high temperatures, so summer is generally more suitable. The most suitable time is the period from May to September; during this period you can choose any time to plant, but after planting it is best to have continuous somewhat cool weather, because if the light is strong the seedlings cannot withstand it.

2. Soaking time for waking the seeds

Carrots take a relatively long time to wake the seeds. Many people soak the seeds for only a short few hours, which causes many seeds not to be fully woken, so after planting they naturally emerge slowly or even fail to emerge. Start waking the seeds about one day before sowing; just soak them in warm water for about 15 hours, then remove them and let them dry for about 30-60 minutes. Because carrot seeds are small, be careful not to crush them when waking the seeds.

3. Weeding

The place where carrots are sown generally has a great many weeds, and they are hard to clean out thoroughly, especially during the few days from sowing to emergence; these weeds will start growing frantically because of ample fertilizer. In order not to affect the emergence of carrot seedlings, before they emerge you can appropriately use some herbicide, which will neither harm the carrot seeds nor fail to kill these weeds. However, when using the herbicide, control the concentration and amount, so as to avoid the chemicals leaching down and accidentally harming the seeds.

4. Watering

After sowing is completed, the whole sowing process is not yet complete; you need to wait until the subsequent watering work is done before it can be considered finished for the time being. Carrot seeds need relatively more water to break through their shells, especially during the stage from shell breaking to emergence, so after sowing you need to water in time. Do not pour the water directly onto the sowing rows; pour it a little to the side of the bed, letting the water slowly seep over to the seeds, so that it is less likely to cause soil crusting and affect the emergence rate.

The above are some key points for sowing carrots, and these will greatly increase the emergence rate of carrot seeds. However, everyone should adjust appropriately according to actual conditions, so as to avoid mistakes.
