What to Do When Enoki Mushrooms Fruiting Is Uneven

Enoki mushrooms (Flammulina filiformis) are a very popular edible fungus on the market. Besides tasting quite good, they are rich in nutrients such as amino acids and protein, and they are also low in calories, making them suitable for friends who are trying to lose weight. However, there are also quite a few problems during the cultivation process, the most common being uneven fruiting, which causes a decline in enoki mushroom quality. So what should be done about uneven fruiting in enoki mushrooms? Let's take a look together with the editor.

1. Management during the pinhead formation stage

The pinhead formation stage is the first stage after enoki mushrooms begin fruiting. At this time the mycelium has already finished growing and the fruiting bodies are slowly emerging. The management before this stage leaned toward mycelial growth, so light and ventilation were not very strong, and humidity was not very high either, which is extremely unfavorable for mycelial growth and development. Therefore, during the pinhead formation stage, ventilation holes should be opened at regular times to provide a certain degree of ventilation, increasing the oxygen concentration in the mushroom house and benefiting the growth of the fruiting bodies. At the same time, the light in the mushroom house should also be increased, because the fruiting bodies and the mycelium are completely different: the mycelium can grow in complete darkness, while the growth of the fruiting bodies requires weak scattered light. In addition to light and ventilation, humidity also needs some adjustment. At this time humidity should be controlled above 90%, which is beneficial for the growth and development of the fruiting bodies.

2. Management during the domestication stage

After pinhead formation, the mushrooms quickly enter the domestication stage. At this time the fruiting bodies have mostly grown to about 1 cm, and the humidity in the mushroom house needs further adjustment, controlling humidity at around 75%, otherwise it will inhibit the growth of the fruiting bodies and cause uneven growth. To domesticate the fruiting bodies, first raise the temperature by 5 degrees; after domestication is finished, that is, after the fruiting bodies have adapted, raise the temperature by 10 degrees. This can speed up the rapid growth of the fruiting bodies, and the growth will also be more uniform.

3. Management during the elongation stage

After the domestication stage, the mushrooms enter the last stage of fruiting, which is the elongation stage. Management at this time has an extremely large influence on whether fruiting is uniform. At this point the fruiting bodies have grown to about 2-3 cm and have entered a period of vigorous growth. To make the fruiting bodies grow faster, the mushroom bags can be completely opened so that more oxygen enters, promoting elongation of the fruiting bodies and making them grow more uniformly. At this time the temperature should be controlled at around 10 degrees, and humidity at around 85%-90%. If the humidity cannot be raised, it can be increased by spraying water; the amount of water sprayed should be determined according to the growth rate of the fruiting bodies. Generally, growth is faster in the middle period, so more water should be sprayed. To make the fruiting bodies grow faster, they need to be exposed to weak light, which can induce the fruiting bodies to stretch and make the stipes become longer.
