Control methods for corn aphids

Corn aphids are one of the common pests and diseases that harm the growth and development of corn, causing damage to both corn yield and quality to a certain extent, and are one of the major insect pests of corn. So how should corn aphids be controlled? Let's take a look.

1. Seed dressing with pesticides

Before sowing corn, appropriate amounts of thiamethoxam, imidacloprid and other pesticides can be planted into the soil together with the seeds, coating the seeds with these pesticides, which has an excellent effect on controlling aphids. To strengthen the control effect, when the corn seeds are about to germinate, spray thiamethoxam or imidacloprid once more for a second coating, and the control effect can reach more than 90%.

2. Fertilizing with pesticides

Besides pesticide seed coating, there are many methods for controlling corn aphids, and when using pesticides for control, thiamethoxam and imidacloprid are mostly used, as these two pesticides are the nemesis of aphids. Besides being used at sowing, when fertilizing corn, appropriate amounts of thiamethoxam and imidacloprid can also be added and applied together, which can also achieve an excellent control effect. However, pay attention to the dosage of pesticides to avoid pesticide damage, and also pay attention to alternating the pesticides to avoid developing resistance and reducing the control effect.

3. Improving the environment

The period when corn is sown is the time when aphids reproduce most vigorously, and many seeds are often harmed by aphids before they even sprout, so the seedlings cannot emerge normally. Therefore, in addition to using pesticides for control, the weeds around the plot can also be cleared away thoroughly, keeping the growing environment well ventilated, and this can also eliminate the places where aphids grow and reproduce, reducing the harm aphids cause to corn. Keeping the growing plot with sufficient light gives a better effect in controlling aphids.

4. Spraying pesticides for control

When corn is harmed by aphids, pesticide control is needed at this point. First, clean the plants harmed by aphids with a brush, then one week later spray thiamethoxam or imidacloprid once. After using the pesticides continuously 3-4 times, the corn will gradually recover its growth and grow better. It is best to spray on a sunny morning or evening, and not at noon on a sunny day or on rainy days. If sprayed at noon on a sunny day, the liquid volatilizes quickly, increasing the concentration of the liquid and very easily causing pesticide damage, while spraying on rainy days means the liquid is washed away and diluted by rainwater, also failing to achieve the expected effect.
