Detailed Explanation of Key Points of Plastic Mulch Onion Planting Technology
Onions can be divided into autumn planting and spring planting depending on the planting time and growing region. South of Beijing, autumn planting is mostly used, while north of Beijing, spring planting is mostly used. When planting onions, plastic mulch technology is mostly used. So how should plastic mulch onions be managed after planting? Let's take a look together with the editor.

1. Planting Time
In regions to the south, autumn planting is mostly used, generally about 40 days before the arrival of severe cold, so that the onion root system resumes growth, and the leaves grow rapidly after turning green. The seedling growth period is long, so the yield is higher than that of spring planting. In regions to the north, where winters are severely cold, onions grown in the open field are difficult to survive, so spring planting is mainly used. In principle, spring planting should be early, carried out as early as possible after the soil thaws, in order to gain a longer growth period, grow more leaves during the bulb expansion stage, and increase yield.
2. Fertilizing and Making Beds
Onion is a fertilizer-loving crop. A deficiency in any one of nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium may lead to reduced yield. Therefore, in order to achieve high yield and good quality, sufficient base fertilizer must be applied before planting. Generally, apply 50 kg of high-nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer and 5000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per mu. Spread them evenly on the bed surface, then plow, and after loosening and raking fine, make beds 100-120 cm wide.
3. Selecting Strong Seedlings
Before transplanting, it is advisable to choose seedlings aged 50-55 days, as such seedlings root very easily after planting and recover growth quickly. 10-15 days before transplanting, spray them with potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer, which can promote early rooting and vigorous growth after planting.
4. Covering with Plastic Mulch
Plastic mulch covering can enhance the onion's overwintering cold resistance, improve the soil's water and fertilizer retention capacity, and greatly increase onion yield. Before covering with mulch, first irrigate thoroughly to create soil moisture. After the water in the beds has completely infiltrated, spray herbicide once, then cover with plastic mulch. When covering with mulch, choose windless weather. The two sides of the mulch should be compacted with clods of soil, otherwise the mulch may be damaged by wind, and it is also unfavorable for field operations.
