What is the purpose of pruning and removing side shoots from peppers? All the methods are here
As the planting area of peppers continues to increase, more and more problems appear during the pepper growing period, and growers often solve some of these problems through pruning and removing side shoots, thereby increasing yield and boosting profits. So what is the purpose of pruning and removing side shoots from peppers? Let's take a look below.

I. The purpose of pruning and removing side shoots
The branches on the upper and lower parts of a pepper plant differ in their fruiting ability. Generally, the first- and second-level branches have strong fruiting ability, and afterward, as the number of branches increases, the fruiting ability gradually declines. Therefore, excess branches can be thinned out so that nutrients are concentrated in the fruiting branches, meeting the nutritional needs of the fruiting branches and significantly increasing the fruiting rate of the whole plant. If these thin, weak branches are not removed in time, they will also consume a large amount of nutrients, which is also unfavorable for improving production efficiency. After thinning out useless branches, the plant's air and light penetration can also be increased, which is very necessary for fruit coloring and enhancing gloss. When there is sufficient light, the fruit is bright and glossy with high commercial value; conversely, the fruit colors lightly and appears dull, with poor commercial quality.
II. Methods of pruning and removing side shoots
1. Three-main-branch pruning and side-shoot removal
This method is suitable for large-fruited varieties. After pruning, it can reduce plant size and increase planting density, which is beneficial to fruit growth and development and fruit coloring. The method is to keep 3 first-level branches with good orientation and thick, strong growth when the plant sets fruit, and cut the remaining branches of the same level from the base. On each main branch, 2 second-level branches with good branching angle and orientation can be kept, and the remaining branches of the same level are removed from the base.
2. Four-main-branch pruning and side-shoot removal method
This method is suitable for horn peppers and most sweet pepper varieties. It can extend the plant's growing period, make the root system thick and well developed, and produce high early yields, but it also has certain disadvantages, namely that air and light penetration will be affected to some extent. It is somewhat similar to three-main-branch pruning and side-shoot removal. When the plant sets fruit, select and keep 4 vigorously growing branches with good orientation as main branches, cut the remaining branches of the same level from the base, then keep 1-2 branches on each main branch, and thin out the remaining branches of the same level.
3. Multi-main-branch pruning and side-shoot removal method
This method is suitable for ox horn pepper and goat horn pepper varieties. It can enable them to bear more fruit, develop a well-developed root system, grow well, and produce high yields, but it will also result in poorer air and light penetration and low early yields. When the plant sets fruit, select and keep 5-6 branches in different positions but thick, strong, and well oriented as main branches, cut off the remaining branches of the same level, keep 1-2 branches on each main branch as fruiting branches, and thin out the remaining branches as early as possible.
4. Irregular pruning and side-shoot removal method
This method is suitable for goat horn pepper varieties and peppers grown in open fields and for early-maturing cultivation. When the side branches on the plant grow to 15-18 cm, cut off the side branches below the first pepper. After fruit set, then according to plant vigor, field air and light penetration, and fruiting conditions, thin out some branches that are too dense, receive poor light, or grow weakly.
