Garlic Seed Selection and Treatment Methods for Garlic Planting
Autumn is a good season for planting garlic, and the selection and treatment of garlic seed before planting are crucial, as this ensures normal garlic growth and increases garlic yield. So how should garlic seed be selected and treated? Let's take a look together.

1. Seed selection
Before sowing, it is best to dry the garlic bulbs in the sun for 2-3 days, which makes the cloves loose, easy to separate, and also promotes garlic seed germination. After harvesting and drying, and before storing in the warehouse, farmers should carefully select garlic bulbs, choosing those that are large, have few and uniform cloves, are white in color, have plump terminal buds, and are free of disease and damage as seed garlic, storing them separately. Select them again before sowing, removing rotten, insect-damaged, and root-rotted bulbs to ensure good quality seed garlic.
2. Separating the garlic
Separating the garlic means removing the root disc, removing damaged cloves, and peeling off the garlic skin, because the garlic skin and root disc both affect water absorption by the garlic to varying degrees, thereby affecting the normal emergence of seedlings. Therefore, removing the garlic skin and root disc before sowing helps the seedlings take root and prevents clove splitting during emergence. If cultivating in saline-alkali soil, to prevent alkali from corroding the garlic seed, the garlic skin and root disc can be left on.
3. Sowing by grade
The size of the garlic seed has a relatively large effect on yield. The larger the mother clove, the stronger the plant grown from it, the larger the garlic bulb formed, and the higher the yield. Therefore, when planting, farmers should not only choose larger garlic bulbs, but also choose large cloves. After separating the cloves, divide them into three grades: large, medium, and small. When planting, choose grade one and grade two cloves. Grade three cloves have weak growth ability and lower yield, so sow by grade.
4. Garlic seed germination
When sowing in autumn, if the garlic seed used is from the current year and has not passed through the dormancy period, the garlic seed needs to be treated. Remove the root disc from the seed garlic without peeling off the skin, place it in a certain container, and spray water while stirring, so that the garlic skin becomes moist, then leave it for 3-4 days before sowing. Alternatively, half a month before sowing, after removing the root disc, soak it briefly in water, then place it in a cellar, spread it on damp ground, and turn it once every 3-4 days so that the garlic seed is evenly exposed to moisture. Keep the temperature at around 11-16 and the relative air humidity at 83%. After about half a month, when the seed develops white roots, it can be sown.
