How to prevent dry tips in garlic

During garlic cultivation, dry leaf tips are a common phenomenon, that is, the tips of the leaves appear dry, withered and yellowed. So why do the leaf tips turn dry, and what are the different causes? When dry tips occur, how should they be handled? What cultivation work should be done before planting to prevent dry tips? Let's take a look below.

1. Causes

During the rotten mother period, nutrient supply is uneven, and yellow leaves and dry tips appear after the nutrients of the garlic mother are exhausted in the early stage. It may also be caused by malnutrition and nutrient deficiency: with magnesium deficiency, old leaves lose green and leaf tips gradually die; with boron deficiency, new leaves yellow and gradually die; with calcium deficiency, leaves bend downward and leaf tips die. Too high a temperature causes evaporation and dry tips, and freezing damage also causes dry tips; high humidity or drought may also be causes. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and damage from toxic gases are also factors. Disease effects, such as leaf blight and late blight, and pest damage, such as garlic maggots.

2. Nutrient adjustment

Note that during the rotten mother period, appropriate topdressing can be applied, using diluted farmyard manure leachate mixed with water, without harming the young roots. Later, nitrogen fertilizer needs to be supplemented, while phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are supplemented in the early and middle stages. Apply sufficient farmyard manure as base fertilizer. After emergence, the nutrients of the garlic mother are used up, and for the subsequent differentiation, timely topdressing with quick-acting compound fertilizer is needed. Throughout the growth period, spray trace element fertilizer at any time.

3. Temperature and humidity

Avoid excessively high temperatures. When planting in autumn and winter, if there is high temperature, it needs to be adjusted by controlling water, watering a small amount several times. It is best to set up shade nets, as shading can avoid rapid water evaporation and prevent water loss and dry tips. If heavy rain occurs, soil humidity will certainly increase immediately, so humidity must be reduced quickly and drainage dredged. In dry seasons, water more in the evening. In winter, pay attention to keeping warm and preventing freezing damage.

4. Other damage

Generally, leaf blight and late blight must be prevented. Both diseases can cause leaf yellowing, and leaf blight in particular starts from the leaf tips. There are also some other diseases. Plant disease-resistant varieties and cultivate strong seedlings. Carry out crop rotation to reduce disease. Prevent garlic maggots, whose feeding underground causes yellowing above ground. Use beta-cypermethrin for root drenching. Pay attention to using more farmyard manure and less chemical fertilizer. Plant in places with no factory pollution nearby.

Dry tips in garlic are a common situation, with complex causes and differing conditions. Only after determining the cause can correct treatment be carried out promptly and effectively to improve the symptoms.
