Cauliflower Planting Conditions

Cauliflower is a vegetable of the cruciferous family, originally a very popular vegetable among people in the Mediterranean region. It is a nutritious, vitamin-rich vegetable. It has long been widely cultivated in China. It can be planted in both northern and southern regions. What exactly are the specific planting conditions? Providing sufficient planting conditions is also for the sake of good growth during cultivation. So now let us take a look.

1. Temperature

It is susceptible to freezing below zero degrees, so overwintering in open-field cultivation in winter is very difficult. Moreover, above 25 degrees it is very difficult to form curds, so its growth has very strict temperature requirements. It is neither cold-tolerant nor heat-tolerant. During stem and leaf growth and curd formation, it is best between 20 and 25 degrees. However, when the curd forms, it still must go through a stage of low-temperature vernalization. Otherwise the curd will not form well. It can germinate well at around 8 degrees.

2. Soil

It is not strict about soil requirements; ideally fertile sandy loam, with somewhat deeper soil, because its root system has relatively strong growth capacity. In compacted soil, root growth is poor. A pH of around 5.5 is best. It can tolerate soil with somewhat high salt accumulation, but it is best not to plant it in saline-alkali land. It can still grow in soil with a salt content within 0.5%, which is a rare adaptability.

3. Water

Water requirements are strict; it must be alternately dry and moist, cannot have water accumulation, cannot be flooded, and cannot be washed by water. But it is also not drought-tolerant; drought is not acceptable. The soil must maintain a certain amount of moisture and cannot be too dry. It cannot be compacted, as water does not easily infiltrate. It is necessary to maintain granular structure and a good water-permeable soil layer structure. It is best to maintain 65% moisture.

4. Light

It is not strict about light requirements, but that does not mean it does not need light, or that it should receive excessively long light exposure. It can be planted with just the sunlight of a general growing area. In fact, it needs sufficient light to make the curd compact, the color better, the leaves dark green, and photosynthesis good. But with insufficient light, the curd is very small and the color is dull.

Cauliflower has relatively strict temperature and water requirements for planting; however, soil and light requirements are not very strict. In short, conditions can be provided entirely according to the situation.
