What places are onion-producing regions?

Onion, just from the name you can tell, is not a vegetable native to our country; it is a foreign vegetable, but it was introduced many years ago and is now widely cultivated in our country. The planting yield is also quite considerable, and the cultivated varieties are all different. But after many years of cultivation in our country, where are the main producing regions now? It is worth learning about, and this way you can also get a general understanding of the growing environment of onions.

1. Main producing regions

Onions originated in West Asia and Central Asia, and were introduced into China during the Western Han period. At present, the main producing regions are Yutai, Jinxiang, Shanxian and other places in Shandong, the Jiuquan and Wuwei areas of Gansu, the Xichang area of Sichuan, the Dongchuan and Yuanmou areas of Yunnan, as well as Fengxian in Jiangsu. The onions produced in Shandong have the best quality. Next, some areas of Taiwan, China also grow them.

2. Temperature and humidity

It has strong adaptability to temperature, and the temperature range is relatively wide. For example, bulbs can gradually sprout above 3°C, and after emergence they can grow well above 12°C. At around 7°C they can hold on without harming the seedlings. At around 20°C, stems and leaves grow relatively well. During normal growth and development, and during the bulb expansion period, growth is better at around 25°C. Germination needs sufficient moisture, seedlings need controlled humidity, the growth period needs continuous moisture, and the expansion period needs the most moisture. Do not water before winter; keep the soil dry.

3. Light

Onion is a long-day crop and must grow under long-day conditions in order for the bulbs to expand smoothly. Moreover, if seeds are to be harvested, flowering and bolting both require long daylight. Therefore, it can be seen that short daylight cannot form expanded bulbs, but it has no effect on leaf growth. Light not only requires a long duration, but its intensity also has requirements, needing relatively strong light.

4. Soil

In onion-growing regions, suitable soil is also a major factor making them suitable for planting. It is best to plant in fertile, loose soil. As for soil acidity and alkalinity, neutral soil is best; slightly acidic or slightly alkaline soil has little effect and can also be planted. But sandy loam is most suitable for growth and gives somewhat higher yields. After all, onion roots are weak, and sandy loam does not accumulate water or become compacted, which is beneficial to root growth. In addition, onions planted in clay loam have relatively good quality and do not spoil after long storage.

The representative onion-producing regions are the ones introduced above. The main producing region is Shandong. Production areas generally have relatively good growing conditions, and the growing environment is relatively suitable for onions. This mainly introduced the essential factor requirements for onion growth.
