Chili pepper storage methods

Chili peppers are a very popular vegetable in many provinces of China. Many people cannot do without chili peppers on the table for every meal, and chili peppers also have considerable nutritional benefits. Nowadays, the market demand for chili peppers is relatively large, so the annual output is also very high. However, sometimes they cannot all be sold, and at that point storage work needs to be done well. So how should chili peppers be stored? Below, the editor brings you chili pepper storage methods. Let's take a look!

1. Trench storage

For trench storage, first find a shady place to dig a trench. The depth of the trench and the thickness of the covering material should be determined according to the temperature of the storage area. The depth and width of the trench are generally kept at about 1 m, and the length is determined by the quantity of chili peppers to be stored. After digging the trench, put the chili peppers directly into the trench, keeping the pile thickness at about 40 cm, but it is best to spread a layer of sand at the bottom of the trench first, and then place the chili peppers on the sand. After the chili peppers are placed, cover them with a layer of sand or straw curtains to improve insulation and prevent them from being damaged by cold.

2. Cave storage

Cave storage means storing chili peppers in earthen caves, cellars, and semi-underground places. First, put the chili peppers into baskets, generally keeping the weight of each basket at about 15 kg. After all the chili peppers are placed in the baskets, cover the top with a layer of paper, then put on the lids, and stack the baskets. Note that this storage method is prone to water loss, so be careful to maintain humidity at all times. Check about once every 10 days, and promptly pick out the chili peppers that have turned red or rotted.

3. Cold storage

Cold storage, as the name suggests, means putting chili peppers into a cold storage facility for storage. Although the storage cost is relatively high, the storage effect is the best. This is because the cold storage facility allows manual and free control of temperature, ensuring the temperature stays within the suitable range for chili pepper storage. Moreover, storage in a cold storage facility allows both basket stacking storage and plastic film controlled atmosphere storage. It can best ensure the storage capacity of chili peppers, increase storage time, and guarantee the top quality of the chili peppers.

4. Controlled atmosphere storage

For controlled atmosphere storage, first select high-quality chili peppers, then pre-cool the chili peppers, and then put them into disinfected boxes, keeping the weight of each box at about 10 kg. Then stack them, about 45 per stack, and add a layer of kraft paper on top to prevent water leakage. Then put an appropriate amount of lime at the bottom to prevent excessive carbon dioxide in the room and excessive humidity from causing the chili peppers to rot. Finally, conduct a gas assessment once a day, and do a good job of oxygen replenishment. Turn them over about once every 10 days, pick out the rotten fruits, and the storage time can reach about two months.

The above is a brief introduction to chili pepper storage methods. There are many storage methods for chili peppers, and everyone needs to choose reasonably according to the actual situation. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and I hope it can help everyone!
