Shallot Planting Methods

Shallot is a rather special vegetable, widely distributed in the northeast region of China. With a growth period of about two months, shallots have very high nutritional value. They can be used to treat insomnia, pharyngitis and other diseases, and can also lower the three highs, and now they are also grown on a fairly large area in China. So how exactly should shallots be planted? Below, the editor will give you a brief introduction. Let's take a look!

1. Land preparation and sowing

First, we need to choose a suitable soil for planting, mainly fertile, loose soil with strong permeability. Then do a good job of land preparation: plow the soil about 30 cm deep, level and harrow it finely, then apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly farmyard manure, supplemented by compound fertilizer. The sowing time for shallots is generally after Qingming Festival, and the sowing method is mainly bed planting. Make beds and dig furrows, control the planting density well, and then plant. If using ridge planting, then you must first dig the ridges well, keeping the ridge spacing at about 60 cm.

2. Scientific fertilization

The root system of shallots is distributed rather shallowly, so their nutrient absorption capacity is not strong, and their drought tolerance is poor. Therefore, during the growing period of shallots, we should do a good job of topdressing to promote the growth of shallots, encourage them to develop into bulbs, and provide sufficient nutrients for shallot growth. We should carry out topdressing according to the growth stage of the shallots. For example, at the seedling stage of shallots, the topdressing fertilizers are mainly ammonium sulfate and potassium sulfate. After the leaf development speed increases, appropriately increase the amount of fertilizer applied to improve the quality and yield of shallots.

3. Reasonable watering

After sowing shallots, if the soil moisture content is relatively high, then there is no need to water, so as to raise the soil temperature. If the soil moisture content is low, then watering should be done properly according to the actual situation. However, be careful to control the amount of watering to avoid excessive water causing root rot and seedling rot. Then, when the bulb part of the shallot begins to expand, appropriately reduce the amount of watering to encourage seedling hardening, and the hardening period is generally about one week. As with topdressing, the amount and frequency of watering should be reasonably adjusted according to the growth stage of the shallots.

4. Pest and disease control

Pest and disease control for shallots is also very important. Common pests and diseases during shallot growth include downy mildew, onion thrips, and so on. No matter what kind of pest or disease it is, we should focus on prevention, and about one week after emergence, appropriately spray for disinfection; it is not suitable to do this on cloudy and rainy days. Spray different agents according to different pests and diseases. For example, downy mildew is generally treated mainly with chlorothalonil, purple blotch mainly with agricultural streptomycin, and onion thrips mainly with Sukebi emulsifiable concentrate.

The above is a brief introduction to shallot planting methods. The planting method for shallots is very simple, but it cannot be managed extensively either, otherwise it will also have a certain impact on yield and quality, so everyone must pay close attention. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and I hope it can help everyone!
