How to germinate loofah seeds

Loofah is a very popular gourd vegetable in summer, and it is grown on a very large area in China. Loofah is relatively easy to grow, gives high yields, and can be harvested multiple times. However, when growing loofah, we first need to do a good job of germinating the seeds to improve the seeds' sprouting ability, so as to achieve the goal of increased and abundant harvest. So how should loofah seeds be germinated? Let's take a look together below!

1. Seed treatment

First, soak the loofah seeds in room-temperature water for about 4 hours. After soaking, put the seeds in warm water at about 52°C and keep the water at that temperature for about 18 minutes. Then take the seeds out and rinse them clean with fresh water; this can effectively eliminate bacteria on the surface of the seeds. After soaking in water, soak them again with chemicals such as procymidone. First soak in fresh water for about 2 hours, then add procymidone to the water and soak for 10 minutes. Then take them out and wash them clean; the main purpose is to improve the loofah's disease resistance and prevent it from being troubled by diseases such as gray mold.

2. Germination methods

Solution germination

There are many ways to germinate loofah seeds, and the most common one is the solution germination method. After selecting good-quality seeds, soak the seeds in a solution such as gibberellin. Be careful to control the concentration well, keeping it at about 0.1%, and control the soaking time to about 15 hours. After soaking, take the seeds out, rinse them clean, drain off the water, and then sow them directly; this can effectively shorten the seed germination time and also achieves the purpose of germination.

Warm water germination

When using warm water germination, first cut off part of the sprouting site of the loofah seeds. When cutting, be careful not to damage the seed embryo, otherwise it will backfire. After cutting, put the seeds in warm water at about 50°C and likewise soak for 15 hours. This promotes the seeds to absorb enough water, then take the seeds out and place them on a wet cloth. Keep the wet cloth moist every day until most of the seeds have sprouted. Then sow the seeds into the soil prepared in advance; when sowing, be careful to face the sprouting site upward.

Incubator germination

When germinating, we should reasonably adjust the germination method according to the planting area and the number of seeds to be germinated. If the planting area is large and the number of seeds to be germinated is large, then we can use the incubator germination method. After disinfecting and washing the seeds, put them into the incubator and check the germination of the seeds every day. When about 60% of the seeds have sprouted, they can be sown. After sowing, be careful to cover with soil. If the temperature is well controlled, the seeds can break through the soil in about 3 weeks. After the seedlings emerge, shade them well.

The above is a brief introduction to how to germinate loofah seeds. Germinating loofah seeds is actually quite simple, and we can reasonably adjust the germination method according to our own germination habits and the actual conditions of the growing environment. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and we hope it can be helpful to everyone!
