Summer tomato flower and fruit preservation methods

High temperature and high humidity in summer both affect the normal pollination and fertilization of tomatoes, leading to poor flowering and fruit set. If the plant grows leggy, less nutrition is supplied to flowers and fruits, which can also cause poor fruiting. So how should flower and fruit preservation be carried out in summer? Let's find out together.

1. Supplement boron and calcium

The two elements calcium and boron play a major role in tomato flowering and fruiting. Boron can be supplemented before flowering, that is, apply boron fertilizer once before each truss of flowers forms or opens. This not only promotes good flower bud differentiation but also avoids the formation of deformed flowers. A concentration of 500-1000 times is suitable. After an interval of about 10 days, spray calcium fertilizer once after fruit set. It is best to choose chelated calcium or lignin calcium, diluted with water at 1000-2000 times for spraying, for a better effect.

2. Reasonable flower treatment

When each truss of flowers opens, 3-4 flowers will follow together. 2-3 days after the first flower treatment of each truss, 4-5 more flowers will appear, and this is the key point for flower treatment. Flower treatment should be mastered before the flowers open, but note that the concentration of the flower treatment agent should decrease as the temperature rises, so as to avoid deformed fruit caused by an overly concentrated flower treatment agent.

3. Control the temperature during the flowering period

The temperature during the flowering period is quite important. The daytime temperature should be kept at 28°C and should not exceed 34°C, and the night temperature should also not exceed 20°C. When the temperature is too high, it is recommended to use a shade net or cooling measures to lower the temperature, so as to avoid high-temperature scorching and effects on fruit set. At the highest temperature at noon, micro-sprinkler equipment can be used together to spray water for cooling, while also alleviating the humidity inside the greenhouse.

4. Spray to promote flowering

Spraying seaweed-based or amino acid-based foliar fertilizer during the tomato flowering and fruiting period can significantly improve flower quality, ensure fruit development, enhance the stress resistance of the fruit, and prevent pests and diseases. However, pay attention to the concentration. Taking seaweed acid-based foliar fertilizer as an example, it should be diluted with water at 500-1000 times for spraying, sprayed continuously 2-3 times, with each interval of 7-10 days, to promote tomato flowering and fruiting.

5. Reasonable fruit thinning

After fruit set, select and keep fruits that are uniform in size, similar in shape, and free of pests and diseases according to needs, and promptly thin out the remaining fruits to save nutrients and concentrate them on the development of large fruits. For example, keep about 3 fruits per truss for large-fruited tomatoes, and 4-5 for medium and small-fruited types. Deformed fruits should be removed promptly.
