Chuanxiong Cultivation Techniques

Chuanxiong is a medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine, with the effects of promoting blood circulation and dispelling wind. It can treat a variety of symptoms, has a wide distribution, and strong growth adaptability. It is suitable for artificial cultivation. Nowadays, artificial cultivation of Chuanxiong also has certain requirements, and these points must be noted to ensure rapid and normal growth and development after planting. What are the procedures and operational details that need to be understood and noted? Let us explore them together now.

I. Site Selection and Land Preparation

It can grow at low and medium altitudes. At low altitudes, it requires a location that is not exposed to sunlight all the time; at high altitudes, it should be on mountain slopes directly exposed to sunlight. Choose loose, breathable sandy loam soil, but do not plant it on gravelly soil. For mountain land preparation, first remove weeds, reinforce the slope surface to prevent soil ridges from collapsing after rain, plow the soil finely, and after leveling, make raised beds 1.2 to 1.5 wide.

II. Sowing and Seedling Raising

Planting is required in autumn, and planting in August is best. When planting, select seeds that have not been harmed by insects or pathogens, remove all the rest, and choose good seeds for planting. Plant on cloudy days or in weather with weak sunlight, not in rainy weather. Planting can be divided by size grade for differentiated cultivation. Remember to open furrows when planting; the furrows should be 30 cm wide and 25 cm deep. Cover with fine soil mixed with plant ash, to a depth of 5 cm.

III. Field Management

Intertillage can be carried out multiple times. Generally, after the seedlings emerge evenly, cultivate once, mainly to remove weeds. Combined with intertillage, this promotes root growth, with a depth of about 8 cm. Then, after about three weeks, weed once more. At this time the rhizomes are expanding, so it is best not to plow; before harvest in the second year, earth up the soil. Each intertillage needs to be combined with topdressing. Generally, apply about 1000 jin of manure per mu along with some cake fertilizer and compost. Each fertilization should be diluted with water and must not be broadcast directly; too high a concentration easily damages the roots.

IV. Harvesting and Processing

Harvest in the summer of the second year, and the specific harvest time is roughly around the Xiaoman solar term. At this time the maturity is just right. Harvesting too early means it is not mature and the yield is low; too late makes it prone to rot, causing losses. Harvest on sunny days, dig out without damaging the roots, remove the aboveground stems, leaves, tendrils, and soil, then dry and process it; drying treatment is sufficient.

The main cultivation techniques of Chuanxiong are the content above. Therefore, it is best to plant according to the growth characteristics of Chuanxiong. Cultivation is not just about planting; more importantly, it is about planting well. In addition, through some management measures, promote good growth and ensure high yield and quality.
