Fertilizer and water management techniques for winter melon

Winter melon is a dish many people enjoy eating, and it has very good market prospects. To achieve high quality and high yield of winter melon, doing a good job of fertilizer and water management is extremely important. So how should fertilizer and water management be carried out for winter melon? Let's learn about it together.

1. Apply sufficient base fertilizer

Before planting, first, when making beds and preparing the soil, dig a long trench in the middle of the bed and bury the base fertilizer. Generally, apply 2000-3000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer or farmyard manure and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu. The base fertilizer has a slower effect and can provide sufficient nutrients for the entire growth period of winter melon.

2. Root topdressing

Root fertilization can be divided into three stages: seedling-promoting fertilizer, vine-promoting fertilizer, and fruit-swelling fertilizer. The seedling-promoting fertilizer is applied when the seedlings begin to grow new roots after transplanting, mainly nitrogen fertilizer, generally applied with irrigation water to reduce the concentration and avoid burning the roots, usually 8-10 kg of urea per mu. The vine-promoting stage is the period of fastest growth for winter melon plants. At this time, 20-25 kg of compound fertilizer should be applied per mu to promote rapid stem and vine growth and lay the foundation for later flowering and fruit setting. After fruit setting, topdressing should also be done in time. At this time, topdressing should be mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and the application of nitrogen fertilizer should be controlled to avoid excessive vegetative growth of the plants, which is harmful to the expansion of young fruits.

3. Foliar fertilization

Starting from after the seedlings are transplanted and survive, spray the leaves with a mixture of 800-1000 times dilution of "Haizhuangyuan 818" Plant Guardian and 800 times dilution of "Haizhuangyuan 818" broad-spectrum foliar fertilizer per mu, spraying once every 7-10 days; spray 800-1000 times dilution of "Haizhuangyuan 818" once each before flowering and at full bloom to promote flowering and fruit setting. When the young fruits are swelling, spray a high-potassium fertilizer solution, and at the same time pay attention to maintaining calcium and boron elements to improve yield and quality.

4. Water management

The fruit-swelling stage of winter melon has a relatively large demand for nutrients and is a key period for fertilization. It is also the period with the greatest water demand. In order to ensure sufficient fertilizer and water and smoothly transport nutrients to the fruits, the soil must be kept moist and must not suffer drought, reducing deformed fruits and cracked fruits and improving commercial value.
