Eggplant Pinching Technique

Eggplant is one of the common vegetables in our daily life. It has a relatively long growth period, and during cultivation, once the plant height exceeds 1.6 m, management becomes difficult, so many vegetable growers adopt the pinching method for cultivation, with good results. So when should eggplant be pinched? What should be noted when pinching? Let's find out together.

1. When to pinch

In greenhouse cultivation, pinching eggplant too early easily shortens its growth and development period, leading to reduced yield; while pinching too late means the eggplant grows quickly, and the top stems and leaves will touch the greenhouse roof, which not only inhibits growth but also, due to the effect of the greenhouse film, increases the chance of the plant developing disease. So generally, when the plant grows to 1.8-2 m, it can be pinched, and this is the most suitable time for pinching.

2. Pinching method

Pinching should be carried out according to the branching characteristics of the eggplant; it is best to leave two leaves above the top inflorescence when pinching, and the main purpose of keeping these two leaves is to synthesize nutrients through their photosynthesis to promote the growth and development of the eggplant fruit. Pinching is generally done in the morning on a sunny day, as this can promote wound healing and avoid infection by pathogens and microorganisms. When pinching, simply pinch off the plant's growing point with your hand, then take it out of the greenhouse.

3. Notes on pinching

First, when pinching, pay attention to the time and environment; it is suitable to do it on a sunny day, in a greenhouse with good ventilation, and under conditions of relatively high humidity, as this helps the wound heal after pinching and also avoids infection and disease caused by pathogens. The removed stems and leaves should also be taken out of the greenhouse. In addition, when pinching, leave 1-2 leaves above the young fruit, so as to help increase photosynthetic products to supply the fruit's growth, and also to provide shade for the young fruit and avoid sunscald. After pinching, strengthen fertilizer and water management. Keep the soil supplied, and when watering, add fertilizer to the water to ensure sufficient nutrients; at the same time, spray foliar fertilizer rich in trace elements to prevent physiological diseases. For pest and disease control, be timely, discover early, and control early.
