Key Points of Shallot Cultivation Techniques and Field Management Methods

Shallot Cultivation Techniques

The shallot is a perennial plant of the Liliaceae family, generally growing in corn fields or citrus orchards. It is a common wild onion in rural areas and can be cultivated artificially. How is cultivation carried out today? Today I will explain to friends who want to grow it how to plant it and what to pay attention to.

I. Cultivation Time

It is best to let shallot seedlings grow under short-day, low-temperature conditions, so the best growing period is generally from August to September. However, in warm regions autumn planting can be postponed appropriately, and in cold regions it can be slightly advanced for overwintering cultivation.

II. Planting Density

Generally, shallots are not strict about environmental requirements and have strong adaptability. If larger bulbs are not needed, they can be planted more densely to increase yield. But for overall considerations, the plant spacing can be set at about 8 to 10 cm, and the row spacing at about 15 cm, enough for a person to pass through.

III. Seed Selection

Bulb division propagation is generally used. At maturity, select shallots with larger aboveground stems and leaves, dig away the soil around the base to take out the bulbs. Select larger, plump bulbs free of pests and diseases, collect them and place them in a dry place. They must not be washed with water or soaked in other agents; simply keep them in a sealed environment to prevent water loss.

IV. Planting Methods

Generally, hole planting and furrow planting are carried out. Hole planting usually means placing two bulbs in a small pit, covering with fine soil, gently pressing the soil firm, then watering to retain moisture, which helps the bulbs bind closely with the soil and take root quickly. Furrow planting means digging furrows about 5 cm deep in the ground, scattering the bulbs evenly in the furrows and covering with soil. After the bulbs are planted, they have not yet grown new roots, so dilute fertilizer water must be applied once every other day, until after one week it becomes once every three days.

By carrying out the pre-sowing preparations at the appropriate cultivation time and following the correct planting process, you can plant shallots well and ensure their growth progress. After reading this, I believe you have gained a better understanding of shallots and roughly know their planting methods. I hope it can be of some help to you.
