Cherry Radish Planting Time and Methods

Cherry radish is one of the four-season radishes in China. It gets its name from its small, delicate shape, which looks a bit like a cherry. It has bright color and high medicinal and nutritional value, and is deeply loved by many people. So how should cherry radish be planted? And when is the planting time? Let's take a look together.

1. Planting Time

Cherry radish can be planted all year round, but when planted in summer, it sometimes shows excessive leaves and incomplete root development, so the best sowing time is generally March to May or September to October. The suitable temperature for its seed germination is 15-30 degrees. After germination, it should be moved promptly to a place with sufficient light. If grown in open fields, you can choose to sow and raise seedlings, then transplant after the seedlings emerge.

2. Sowing

Cherry radish prefers to grow in fertile, loose sandy loam with good water retention and good drainage. It likes potassium fertilizer, so during planting, sufficient fertilizer should be applied to the soil to support its growth needs. Before sowing, water the soil thoroughly once, then evenly scatter the seeds over the surface and cover with about 1 cm of soil. After sowing, keep the soil moist. At an average daily temperature of 20-25 degrees, germination takes about 3-4 days. Dibbling can also be used, generally sowing 2-3 seeds per hole, with a hole spacing of about 5 cm.

3. Seedling Stage Management

Within one week of germination, true leaves will grow, and the branches and buds will gradually become dense. At this time, thinning should be done well, especially for the broadcast sowing method. As the seedlings continue to grow, thin them again when they have 4-5 leaves. At this point, the plants should be spaced more than 5 cm apart. After thinning, earth up around the roots to prevent the seedlings from lodging. During the seedling stage, the light requirements are relatively strict. Insufficient light will affect the synthesis and accumulation of photosynthetic products, and the expansion of its roots will be hindered and slow, resulting in poorer quality. To flower normally, it needs at least 12 hours of light per day.

4. Fertilizer and Water Management

As cherry radish grows leaves, its stems also gradually thicken. If the soil is dry, remember to water to replenish moisture. Once water is insufficient, its stems will become hard and bent. After true leaves grow, fertilizer is generally applied once every 10 days, preferably liquid fertilizer. Generally, after one month of growth, its roots will gradually expand outward, and then it can be harvested. Before harvesting, watering should be appropriately reduced. At harvest, water thoroughly, then pull out the whole plant.
