Water Culture Methods for Water Spinach

Water spinach is a vegetable that people relatively like, especially in summer when it appears on the market in large quantities. Because water spinach has strong adaptability, both sowing and cuttings can grow normally, and after one harvest it can grow again, just like chives, so many people grow water spinach themselves at home, but soil is not easy to handle. In fact, water spinach can be grown by water culture, so how should water spinach be grown by water culture? Let us understand together.

1. Seed germination

The seed coat of water spinach is relatively thick and hard, so if it is sown directly, its germination speed is extremely slow. Therefore, before sowing, germination must be carried out. The seeds can be soaked in warm water at about 30 degrees for about 20 hours. After they have absorbed enough water, take them out, rinse them with clean water several times, and then carry out germination. For germination, wrap the soaked seeds in a cloth bag or gauze, control the germination environment temperature at about 25 degrees, open it once a day and rinse it with clean water. When more than half of the seeds show white and break open, they can be sown.

2. Sowing

For sowing, a relatively large flower pot can be chosen. Before sowing, water thoroughly once, then evenly scatter the germinated seeds in the flower pot, and cover with 1-2 cm of soil. After sowing, spray water frequently to keep the soil moist, and at the same time control the temperature reasonably to promote the emergence of seedlings.

3. Planting

For planting, containers such as buckets, basins, or water tanks can be chosen, and foam boards can be used as floating mats, while sponges, wheat straw, and the like can be used to fix the seedlings. When the seedlings break through the soil and grow to 4-5 leaves, they can be transplanted. When transplanting, make holes in the floating mat, plant 2-3 seedlings in each hole, then fix the seedlings with sponges so that they float on the water surface. The growth of water spinach cannot be separated from fertilizer, so an appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer or organic fertilizer can be added to the water to make it grow vigorously.

4. Harvesting

Water spinach can be harvested multiple times. Generally, when it grows to about 30 cm, it can be picked. For the first picking, leave two nodes at the base, as this can promote the sprouting of side vines. Each subsequent harvest should be done the same way. Do not leave too many nodes, because this will cause too many side vines to sprout, consume a large amount of nutrients, and thus disperse the nutrition, affecting quality and yield. After each harvest, fertilize once.
