Chayote Propagation Methods

Chayote is a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family and is widely distributed in the southern regions of China. Chayote has relatively high nutritional value, containing rich nutrients such as protein and fat. Nowadays, the planting area of chayote is also growing larger and larger. So how should we propagate chayote when growing it? Below, the editor brings you the propagation methods of chayote. Let's take a look!

1. Whole-fruit propagation

Whole-fruit propagation is the main propagation method for chayote. First, we need to select a high-quality seed fruit. The seed fruit must be fully mature, with no obvious wounds, no frost damage, and no pests or diseases. Its weight should be kept at around 250g, then place the seed fruit in moist sand and maintain suitable temperature and humidity. Keep the temperature at around 16°C. After about two weeks, the top of the seed fruit will begin to sprout. When most of the seed fruits have sprouted, they can be appropriately transplanted into the soil. When transplanting, face the sprouted part upward, maintain a certain tilt, and carry out proper management.

2. Seed propagation

For seed propagation, first take out the complete seeds from the fruit. After taking out the seeds, separate the outer skin of the seeds and keep the seed kernels. If the seeds are relatively shriveled, then eliminate them as early as possible, because not only is the germination rate low, but the plants that grow from them also have very weak growth ability. Then soak the high-quality seeds in warm water for about 1-2 hours to carry out germination promotion. Then sow at the appropriate time according to the environment, germination conditions, and so on. After sowing, cover with soil and mulch to improve the soil's ability to retain heat and moisture, and keep the temperature at around 20°C. Then water appropriately, and seedlings can emerge in about one hour.

3. Cutting propagation

Cutting propagation is suitable for many plants, and of course chayote is no exception. First, choose a plant that grows robustly and has no pests or diseases as the mother plant. Then cut branches from the plant as cuttings, and apply an appropriate amount of rooting powder to the cut to increase the rooting rate of the cuttings. Then insert the cuttings into the cutting substrate. The substrate must ensure sufficient fertility, normal drainage and irrigation, and be thick and loose. Control the cutting density well, then water thoroughly, and keep the temperature at around 22°C. In this way, the rooting rate can reach 80%, and roots can form in about 7 days.

The above is a brief introduction to chayote propagation methods. There are many propagation methods for chayote, and the main thing is to reasonably choose a good propagation method according to your own planting habits, environment, and so on. That's all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and I hope it can be helpful to everyone!
