Forsythia Cultivation Techniques

Forsythia is a commonly used Chinese medicinal herb with a long history of use. It is a common medicine for clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and dispersing nodules, and is cultivated in many places across the country. It blooms in spring, with the whole plant covered in golden yellow flowers, giving it extremely high ornamental value. Let's take a look at forsythia cultivation techniques together with the editor below.

1. Site Selection and Land Preparation

Forsythia prefers a warm and humid environment and plenty of sunlight, but it is not afraid of shade, and its cold resistance is also relatively strong. It has low requirements for soil and tolerates drought and poor soil, but it is afraid of waterlogging. Therefore, when planting, choose soil with deep soil layers, loose texture and good drainage, so as to avoid the phenomenon of water accumulation causing root rot. Apply base fertilizer before land preparation, generally 4000-5000 kg of farmyard manure per mu, reduce deep plowing to 30 cm, mix it evenly with the soil, rake it fine and level it, then make beds, requiring a bed height of 15 cm, a width of 1.5 m, and a bed ditch width of 20-25 cm.

2. Sowing

Before sowing, first carry out germination promotion. First soak the seeds in gibberellin alcohol for 4 hours, which can break the dormancy period of forsythia seeds, then mix the seeds with wet river sand and place them in an environment of 10-20 degrees for germination promotion. Buds will appear in about one month. Use the drill sowing method for sowing, sow the germinated seeds well, then cover with straw curtains, which has the effect of preserving heat and moisture, and seedlings will emerge the following year.

3. Planting Management

When the seedlings grow to a certain extent, they can be transplanted and established. Apply a small amount of compound fertilizer to each planting hole, then place the seedlings into the holes, and cover with soil higher than the ground surface, so that water accumulation is less likely. During seedling growth, pay attention to weeds in the field, weed frequently, and cultivate more soil to promote seedling growth. When forsythia grows to 80-100 cm, prune the top shoots, which can promote lateral branch growth, and 3-4 lateral branches should be kept on each seedling. In winter, cut off all old branches, diseased branches, weak branches, leggy branches and pest-damaged branches, which reduces nutrient consumption and also prevents pests and diseases. Water and fertilizer are essential for forsythia growth and should be managed according to the soil conditions, climate factors and plant growth conditions of each region.
