Yulan Magnolia Propagation Methods

Yulan magnolia, also known as magnolia and purple magnolia, is a plant unique to China, mainly distributed in the southern regions. Its plant form is attractive, its flowers are gorgeous, and its fragrance is elegant and understated, giving it high ornamental value. In addition, it is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb and an extremely precious flowering tree. So how should yulan magnolia be propagated? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.

1. Seed propagation

Seed propagation can be done by spring sowing or autumn sowing. Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water with plant ash for 3-5 days, rub off the waxy layer on their surface, then soak them in warm water for one more day. Remove them and cover with a layer of rice straw, water frequently to keep them moist, and sow once the seeds split open. Use the drill sowing method, open furrows on the seedbed surface, scatter the seeds into the furrows, and cover with about 8 cm of soil. After sowing, keep the soil moist. For one month after the seedlings emerge, provide shade, water in time, and do a good job of weeding and fertilizing. After two years of growth, they can be planted out in the field.

2. Cutting propagation

Cutting propagation is generally carried out in May-June. Select robust perennial branches from young trees, cut them into 10-12 cm lengths, leave two leaves at the lower end, leave a bud at the lower end, dip the end in rooting powder, and then insert the cuttings. When inserting, use a row spacing of 15 cm × 4 cm, with the leaves facing to one side. After inserting, water thoroughly once, then cover with plastic film, and then cover with straw mats for shade. After the cuttings take root and survive, do a good job of weeding, topdressing, and providing light. After about one year, they can be planted out in the field.

3. Division propagation

The root system of the yulan magnolia plant produces tillers. In winter dormancy or early spring, dig out the old plant with tillers, divide it into several plants, and each plant must have roots to survive. Plant them as soon as they are dug, digging holes on the ground at a row spacing of 150 cm × 200 cm, transplanting one plant per hole, and spreading the roots out. Then cover with soil and press firmly so that the roots and soil are closely connected, then water thoroughly once to help them survive.

4. Layering propagation

In June, select young, tender branches from the mother plant that are robust and free of pests and diseases. At a branching point, peel off the bark of the branch, then cover it with a slender bamboo tube or a bottomless clay pot so that the branch is inserted into the tube, and pack fertile soil into the tube. Tie the outside tightly, and thereafter water frequently to keep the soil moist. After about one year, roots will form inside the tube. At this point, it can be separated from the mother plant to become a new plant, and transplanted elsewhere.
