What to do after rice flood disasters

Rice is an important food crop in China. In the rice-growing regions of the south, where rainfall is abundant, rice often gets submerged during the annual plum rain season. Once flooding exceeds 48 hours, it is very likely to cause the entire plant to die. So what should be done after rice is flooded? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.

1. Drain water and expose seedlings

After the water recedes, drain the water promptly, clear the ditches, and remove silt to reduce waterlogging, so that the submerged seedlings can emerge from the water as quickly as possible and enhance respiration. When draining water to expose the seedlings, also pay attention to the weather conditions. If it is cloudy, the water can be drained completely in one go; if it is sunny, a shallow water layer should be kept in the field to meet the water needs of seedling transpiration and avoid death from dehydration. After the seedlings recover, drain the water and expose the field to restore growth. For plants that were submerged but not for long and have not died, expose the seedlings and wash the leaves promptly, washing off the mud from the leaves. For lodged seedlings, set them upright to promote normal growth.

2. Fertilization

For early rice at the booting and grain-filling stage, after timely drainage and leaf washing, spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution according to the seedling condition to strive for larger panicles, increase grain weight, and maintain yield, while also preventing pests and diseases. For middle rice at the tillering stage, also drain water and wash leaves promptly, then after irrigating with shallow water, apply 2.5 kg of urea and 4 kg of potash fertilizer per mu to promote recovery as quickly as possible, and also pay attention to outbreaks of diseases and strengthen prevention and control. For late rice seedlings, plow and level the field promptly, and after exposing the field and irrigating with shallow water, apply 5 kg of urea per mu to promote rapid recovery of the seedlings and root growth, and improve the survival rate.

3. Replanting and changing crops

For plots that were submerged and lack seedlings, replant promptly to ensure a full stand and reduce losses. If most of the seedlings have died, change to other plants promptly according to the growing season and temperature conditions. Rice that can continue to be grown should be rescued promptly, while rice that cannot be rescued should be promptly replaced with dryland crops, such as potato, mung bean, buckwheat, and so on, to avoid wasting the land.
