Field Management Techniques for Kohlrabi Cultivation

Kohlrabi is a biennial plant of the Brassicaceae family, also known as stem turnip. Because kohlrabi has a fresh, sweet taste and tender, crisp, delicate flesh, plus its rich nutritional content, its sales on the market are also very good. For this reason, kohlrabi is widely cultivated in various regions of China. To ensure the yield and quality of kohlrabi, the editor has specially brought you the field management techniques for kohlrabi cultivation today. Let's take a look.

1. Fertilization

Kohlrabi has a relatively large demand for nutrients and is a fertilizer-loving plant, but when fertilizing, we also need to proceed scientifically according to the plant's nutrient requirements, growth conditions and planting season. In addition to base fertilizer, we also need to apply topdressing at its different growth stages. In terms of fertilization, nitrogen fertilizer is still the main type, and appropriate use of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is sufficient. During the growth period of kohlrabi, nitrogen fertilizer is generally applied in holes, or it is irrigated with manure and urine water, and an appropriate amount of urea can be added to the manure and urine water. When kohlrabi begins to form heads, we need to appropriately supplement phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer to enhance the plant's resistance and avoid plant aging. Finally, during the head-forming process, it is also necessary to appropriately supplement trace element fertilizers such as calcium, magnesium and zinc.

2. Watering

The growth of kohlrabi requires a large amount of water, so we need to water multiple times during the planting process. After kohlrabi is transplanted, it should be watered promptly and thoroughly, then watered again after three days if there is no rainfall. The next watering is after one week. This watering needs to be carried out reasonably according to the moisture level of the soil. It should not be too wet, but it should also be thoroughly moistened. Then, each time we apply topdressing, if it is dry application, we had better water after fertilizing. Also, when kohlrabi begins to form heads, the water demand during this period is very large, and it should be watered at least three or four times to supplement water, so that the kohlrabi grown will be more tender and crisp. Finally, everyone should be reminded that waterlogging should not occur in the field, and if there is any, it must be drained immediately.

3. Weeding

During the growth process of kohlrabi, we also need to weed for kohlrabi, generally through cultivation. This can not only clean up the weeds in the field, but also enhance soil permeability, improve the nutrient absorption rate, and promote plant growth. During the entire growth process of kohlrabi, it generally needs to be done two to three times, but all must be completed before the canopy closes. If there are still weeds after the canopy closes, then only manual pulling of weeds can be done.

4. Pest and Disease Prevention

During the planting process, we also need to pay attention to the prevention and control of pests and diseases. Among them, the main diseases include viral disease, black rot and soft rot. So the first thing we need to do is disinfect the field soil with lime water before planting kohlrabi. The second is to pay attention to planting density, which should not be too high. The last is to use Bordeaux mixture and chlorothalonil for prevention and control. The most harmful insect pests include aphids, cabbage caterpillars, diamondback moths, etc. So we had better use low-toxicity pyrethroid insecticides for prevention and control, but note that no pesticide can be sprayed at all half a month before harvest.

In terms of cultivation techniques, kohlrabi is actually no different from Chinese cabbage, and much of it is similar to Chinese cabbage cultivation, so it is also very simple to grow. I believe that after reading the above, everyone basically understands it clearly.
