Fennel sowing and seedling raising techniques

Fennel, originally called xiaohuaixiang, also known as xiangsica i and xiaohuixiang, has stems and leaves that can be eaten as a vegetable, and its fruit can be used as a spice, which is the common cumin in our daily lives. Fennel is mostly grown by sowing, but if you want to increase the seed germination rate when growing it, you should carry out germination and seedling raising. Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below with the editor.

1. Seed selection

There are many fennel varieties, so seeds should be selected according to the local climate, soil and cultivation purpose, and it is recommended to choose varieties with strong disease resistance, high yield and stable production. Choose plump fennel seeds, wash the surface impurities off with clean water, then remove and set aside.

2. Preparing the seedbed

Choose a plot with deep soil, loose and fertile soil and good drainage as the seedbed. The plot does not need to be too large; 10-15 sq m is enough. Deeply plow and level it, and if conditions permit, the soil can also be disinfected to eliminate pathogens and underground pests. To ensure that fennel seedlings have sufficient nutrients for growth, fully decomposed high-quality farmyard manure can be applied per sq m as base fertilizer, which can promote rapid seedling emergence and growth.

3. Soaking seeds to promote germination

Put the cleaned seeds into warm water at about 55°C and soak for 12 hours. After they have absorbed enough water, rub them repeatedly with your hands to separate them. After removing them, wash them with clean water and then carry out germination. Put the seeds in a gauze bag and place them in an environment of 20-22°C for germination. During germination, rinse them with warm water 1-2 times a day. After about a week, the seeds will sprout and can be sown for seedling raising.

4. Seedling raising

Before sowing, water the seedbed thoroughly, mix the germinated seeds evenly with fine sand, spread them on the seedbed, and then cover with a 1 cm thick layer of fine soil. Spring sowing should be done in a greenhouse for seedling raising, while summer sowing should include shading measures to lower the temperature and preserve moisture. Generally, about a week after sowing, the seedlings will break through the soil. At this time, thin them promptly and use light watering to keep the soil moist. When the seedlings grow to 5-6 true leaves, they can be transplanted to the field.
