How to plant Chinese toon seeds

You have probably all heard of Chinese toon (Toona sinensis). It is a vegetable with very high nutritional value in our country and falls into the category of wild vegetables. Because market demand keeps rising, the planting area of Chinese toon is also becoming more and more extensive. When planting Chinese toon, propagation is a very important step. The propagation method now most often used for Chinese toon is mainly sowing. So how should Chinese toon seeds be planted? Now let the editor introduce it to you below!

1. Harvesting seeds

The fruiting period of Chinese toon is relatively long; generally it does not enter the fruiting period until about 8 years after planting. When collecting seeds, we should choose a Chinese toon tree about 20 years old with strong growth, a high fruit yield and no pests or diseases as the mother plant. When the fruit turns from green to a dark color, it means it has matured. At this time it can be harvested; after harvesting, the fruit should be placed under the sun and exposed for about a week. Until the fruit's moisture evaporates and the fruit skin splits open to reveal the seeds. Then clean out the impurities thoroughly, put them into a storage bag for storage; the germination rate of fresh seeds harvested in the same year can reach about 85%.

2. Choosing land and preparing the soil

After collecting seeds, we should choose a plot with good drainage and irrigation, sufficient water and sandy soil as the planting plot. Then in spring, finely level and harrow the soil, and according to the soil area control the specifications of the beds, and make the beds ready for planting. After making the beds, apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly decomposed farmyard manure, supplemented by phosphate fertilizer. Pay attention to controlling the amount; keep farmyard manure at about 1500 jin/mu, and phosphate fertilizer at about 50 jin/mu. And appropriately spray insecticides such as trichlorfon to eliminate pests. Then plow the soil once to fully mix the soil with the pesticide and fertilizer, and water thoroughly about a week before sowing.

3. Seed germination

After completing the preliminary preparation work, the seeds also need to be treated for germination. First, about a week before sowing, put the seeds into warm water at about 50 degrees, stirring for about 5 minutes at the beginning. Then soak the seeds for about a day. After soaking, take them out and wash them clean, then put them into wet sand or a bag for the seeds, ensure sufficient moisture, and then place the bag at a temperature of about 25 degrees for germination. During germination, wash the seeds once every day. When more than half of the seeds have split open and shown white, they can be sown.

4. Sowing at the right time

The sowing time for Chinese toon seeds is generally around March to April, and the sowing work should be done before Grain Rain. The sowing method for Chinese toon is generally mainly drilling. First dig sowing furrows on the bed surface, keeping the row spacing at about 36 cm. Then water the sowing furrows to wash the soil. After the water has soaked through the soil, spread the seeds evenly and comprehensively into the sowing furrows; after sowing, cover with a layer of fine soil, then water thoroughly. After the seedlings successfully emerge, do a good job in seedling management, and thin the seedlings in time when about 5 true leaves have grown.

The above is a brief introduction to how to plant Chinese toon seeds. The growth cycle of Chinese toon is relatively long. Therefore we should do a good job in management, strengthen planting techniques, and maintain a certain patience. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only.
