The correct methods and key technical points for fertilizing onions
Onion is a nutrient-rich vegetable that is widely grown in China. In the process of growing onions, in order to promote high yield and high quality, scientific fertilization techniques are a very key step. So do you know how onions should be fertilized? Today the editor brings you an introduction to onion fertilization techniques, so you can briefly get to know them.

1. Seedling fertilizer
Onion seedling fertilizer refers to the fertilizer applied during the seedling-raising period. Onion seedlings grow relatively slowly, so before raising seedlings we need to apply seedling fertilizer well. Seedling fertilizer is mainly based on farmyard manure, with three to four jin of phosphate fertilizer added, and it should be spread evenly over the seedling plot, then turned into the soil and mixed well. After the onions are sown, we should combine it with watering for topdressing, mainly by watering with manure and urine water mixed with a small amount of quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, to promote the growth and development of the seedlings.
2. Base fertilizer
Base fertilizer, also known as bottom fertilizer, is generally applied before planting, and the bottom fertilizer must be applied in sufficient quantity, as it is one of the basic conditions for onion growth. Under normal circumstances, the amount of bottom fertilizer required per mu is about six hundred jin. The bottom fertilizer is mainly onion-specific fertilizer Dongliwang, supplemented with sixty jin of high-potassium compound fertilizer and fifty jin of phosphate fertilizer, applied together with land preparation, so that nutrients are balanced and the soil quality is improved.
3. Topdressing
Topdressing in the later stage of onion growth is also very important, and it is generally done in three to four applications. The first is carried out about seven to ten days after planting, also called seedling recovery fertilizer; this time it is mainly watered with manure and urine water, and an appropriate amount of ammonium sulfate fertilizer can also be added. The second topdressing is generally about one month after planting, which is about the time of early spring; this is also called green-up fertilizer or plant-development fertilizer. In order to promote the growth of onion stems and leaves, high-nitrogen-potassium water-soluble fertilizer is mainly used, or manure and urine water is used for flushing application. The last application is topdressing at the early stage of the underground bulb's growth and enlargement, mainly to promote the enlargement of the underground bulb, also called bulb-forcing fertilizer; during this period, potassium fertilizer is mainly used, combined with a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer for watering application.
4. Supplementary fertilizer
Many people do not understand onion supplementary fertilizer. It is mainly a kind of fertilization used to supplement certain nutrient deficiencies that appear during the growth of onions. For example, when the stems and leaves of onions turn yellow, or when heart rot, root rot, or hooked tips appear, this indicates that the onions lack some kind of trace element fertilizer during growth, so after topdressing we need to carry out supplementary fertilization. For example, supplement fertilizers such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium.
