Top Ten Anti-Aging Medicinal Herbs

Traditional Chinese medicine is the weapon used in TCM to fight disease and to maintain and strengthen health. China's earliest pharmaceutical monograph, the Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica), recorded 365 medicines, of which more than 100 were listed as "upper grade." The Chinese medicines listed as upper grade were non-toxic "tonics" with the effect of strengthening the body. Through long-term practice, TCM practitioners have continued to discover new Chinese medicines with anti-aging effects (called "lightening the body and prolonging life" in materia medica books). Here, a selection of Chinese medicines confirmed by both Chinese and Western medicine to have anti-aging effects is briefly introduced.

He Shou Wu (Fallopia multiflora)

The Song dynasty Kaibao Bencao called it "taken over a long period, it strengthens the sinews and bones, benefits the essence and marrow, and prolongs life without aging." Modern research has found that He Shou Wu can promote nerve cell growth and has an auxiliary therapeutic effect on neurasthenia and other nervous system diseases. It can also regulate serum cholesterol, lower blood sugar, and improve the liver cells' ability to transform and metabolize cholesterol. He Shou Wu also has a very good antioxidant effect.

Huang Qi (Astragalus membranaceus)

TCM holds that "the spleen is the foundation of the acquired constitution." Li Gao, the representative figure of the spleen-stomach school, believed that Huang Qi "benefits the original qi and tonifies the three burners," and Huang Gongxiu of the Qing dynasty called Huang Qi "the best of all qi-tonifying medicines." Modern research has found that Huang Qi can not only dilate the coronary arteries, improve myocardial blood supply, and enhance immune function, but also delay the process of cell aging.

Ren Shen (Panax ginseng)

The Shennong Bencao Jing holds that Ren Shen can "tonify the five viscera, calm the spirit, stabilize the ethereal and corporeal souls, stop palpitations, eliminate pathogenic qi, brighten the eyes, open the heart, and benefit the intellect. Taken over a long period, it lightens the body and prolongs life." Modern research has found that it also has anti-aging, antioxidant, and anti-fatigue effects, protects the liver, regulates cardiovascular function, and stimulates the function of the hematopoietic system.

San Qi (Panax notoginseng)

Zhao Xuemin, a famous physician of the Qing dynasty, said in his work Bencao Gangmu Shiyi (Supplement to the Compendium of Materia Medica): "Ren Shen is first for tonifying qi, San Qi is first for tonifying blood; their flavor is the same and their effects are equal," calling San Qi "the most precious of Chinese medicines." Modern research has found that the chemical composition, pharmacological effects, and clinical applications of San Qi are similar to those of Ren Shen. San Qi can dilate blood vessels, reduce vascular resistance, increase cardiac output, lower heart rate, and reduce myocardial oxygen consumption and capillary permeability, giving it a clear advantage over Ren Shen in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Ci Wu Jia (Eleutherococcus senticosus)

The Bencao Gangmu called it "taken over a long period, it lightens the body and resists aging," and "better to have a handful of Wu Jia than a cart full of gold and jade." Modern research has also found that Ci Wu Jia has anti-aging, anti-fatigue, and strengthening effects, and can also regulate the functions of the endocrine system, nervous system, and cardiovascular system, and has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and certain anti-cancer effects.

Ling Zhi (Ganoderma lucidum)

The Shennong Bencao Jing holds that Ling Zhi can "tonify liver qi and calm the ethereal and corporeal souls," and "taken over a long period, it lightens the body and prevents aging, prolonging life like an immortal." Modern research has confirmed that Ling Zhi regulates the functions of the respiratory system, nervous system, and cardiovascular system, and has functions such as scavenging free radicals, immune regulation, and balancing metabolism, directly affecting the human aging process.

Gou Qi Zi (Lycium barbarum)

The Bencao Huiyan praised it as "enabling qi to be replenished, blood to be tonified, yang to be generated, and yin to be nourished." The Shennong Bencao Jing called Gou Qi Zi "taken over a long period, it strengthens the sinews and bones, lightens the body and prevents aging, and endures cold and heat." Gou Qi Zi has an "adaptogen-like" effect similar to Ren Shen, and can resist arteriosclerosis and promote the regeneration of liver cells; taking it has the effect of strengthening the constitution and delaying aging.

Hong Jing Tian (Rhodiola rosea)

There is no record of Hong Jing Tian in ancient materia medica; it is a newly discovered anti-aging star of modern times, with the effects of tonifying the original qi, clearing heat, detoxifying, stopping bleeding, and calming the spirit and benefiting the intellect. Hong Jing Tian has a tonic effect similar to Ren Shen, and can resist hypoxia, fatigue, cold, viruses, and radiation, inhibit the growth of cancer cells, improve work efficiency, and delay the aging of the body.

Jiao Gu Lan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum)

Jiao Gu Lan is a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. In recent years it has been found that Jiao Gu Lan has anti-fatigue, anti-cancer, and anti-aging effects, regulates endocrine function, can improve the body's adaptability and immunity, lower cholesterol and transaminases, inhibit ulcers, prevent tumors, relieve tension, and has sedative and analgesic effects.

Royal Jelly

Royal jelly is a treasure among bee products, rich in nutrients, and can promote protein synthesis, promote cell growth, enhance the body's metabolism, and strengthen tissue regeneration capacity. At the same time, because it is rich in superoxide dismutase and vitamin C and vitamin E, it is a rare and excellent anti-aging medicine.
