What issues need attention when growing Polygonatum

As wild resources decline but demand for medicinal herbs grows, artificially cultivating medicinal herbs has become a widely understood money-making venture. The Polygonatum growing project has sparked a wave of enthusiasm in the market in recent years, drawing many people into this industry, but quite a few of them lack professional growing skills, so quite a few problems have arisen during cultivation. So today, based on the problems everyone has encountered, the editor will briefly introduce a few points to note when growing Polygonatum. Let's take a look.

1. Soil

Polygonatum has certain requirements for the soil of the growing site; only suitable soil conditions allow Polygonatum to grow and develop better. Polygonatum is suitable for growing in fertile, deep-layer, humus-rich soil with abundant organic matter. Of course, if such soil is not available, you can settle for the next best option and consider sandy loam. Another point to note is that when preparing the land, we should clean up the impurities in the soil and disinfect the soil, so that the Polygonatum grown will be of better quality.

2. Time

The time for planting Polygonatum is also something we need to consider, because not all times are suitable for growing Polygonatum. If propagating by rhizome, we generally dig up Polygonatum tubers from November of the first year to March of the following year, and after processing, wait until the surface temperature rises before planting. But if propagating by seed, the seeds are generally harvested in August, treated by sand storage, and then sown in March of the following year.

3. Water

Polygonatum has a relatively large demand for water during its growth process, but the amount of water must be controlled with each watering; the humidity in the field should not be too high, otherwise it will trigger various diseases such as root rot, anthracnose, and leaf spot. We only need to water frequently to keep the soil moist; generally keeping humidity at around 50 percent is enough. At the same time, according to Polygonatum's different water needs at different growth stages, we just need to reasonably control the watering amount. Water during droughts and drain during rainy periods to avoid waterlogging in the field.

4. Nutrients

To ensure the quality and yield of Polygonatum, nutrient management is crucial. During the seedling growth stage of Polygonatum, we should follow the principle of frequent fertilization to promote seedling growth, but we must not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer, so as to avoid excessive vegetative growth of branches and leaves, which would affect the thickening of the underground tubers. In the later growth process, cake fertilizer is mainly used to promote the thickening of Polygonatum tubers, so as to achieve the goal of increasing yield.

5. Light

Polygonatum is a shade-loving plant, but this does not mean its growth does not need light. Generally, when choosing a growing site, we choose a semi-shaded and semi-sunny area, or an area with shade objects nearby, since such areas have inherent growing advantages. Secondly, during cultivation we can build a shade shed, but it should be a transparent type to avoid direct sunlight, which can also ensure a certain amount of light in the field and is more conducive to the growth of Polygonatum.

In fact, the most important thing in growing Polygonatum is to be careful, and to be relatively strict about all its requirements. Secondly, we must also pay close attention when choosing soil as well as seeds and tubers. The most important thing is scientific growing techniques and reasonable management techniques; these are the keys to successful Polygonatum cultivation.
