High-Yield Cultivation Techniques for Sweet Potato

Sweet potato is one of China's five grains and miscellaneous cereals. As awareness of health cultivation has grown, the market for sweet potato has become much better than before. Although growing sweet potato is simple, achieving high yields requires considerable effort. Let's take a detailed look below with the editor.

1. Land Preparation and Fertilization

Sweet potato is a root tuber plant, suitable for growing in soil with deep soil layers, loose texture, and good aeration. Before planting, the soil should be deeply plowed to improve its permeability, which helps the root tubers expand and increases yield. Plowing is generally done at 30-40 cm. Ridge cultivation can be used; if fertility is poor, flat cultivation or low-ridge cultivation can be used. However, sweet potato is generally planted in sandy soil with insufficient fertility, so base fertilizer must be applied to achieve high yields. Generally, 2000-2500 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per mu, combined with 50 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer, is applied.

2. Seed Selection and Cultivation

Choose high-yield, disease-resistant, high-quality varieties, such as virus-free Beijing 553, virus-free Xushu 18, Xinnong No. 1, etc. Climate and soil conditions vary by region, so planting time should be chosen according to local conditions. Generally, planting time is in April-May, when rainfall is abundant and temperatures are suitable, resulting in a high survival rate after planting. When planting, pay attention to planting density. Long-vine varieties and plots with sufficient fertility are suitable for sparse planting, while short-vine varieties and plots with insufficient fertility are suitable for dense planting.

3. Cultivation and Weeding

Appropriate cultivation during the growing period can loosen the soil, increase aeration, raise ground temperature, and eliminate weeds. Generally, during the seedling stage, cultivation and weeding should be done multiple times to promote seedling growth. However, pay attention to the depth of cultivation to avoid damaging the root system and affecting normal plant growth and development. For long-vine varieties, when they grow to a certain extent, pinch the tips promptly to make the stems thick and multi-branched, which has a yield-increasing effect. When the tubers are expanding, vine control is needed to prevent excessive vegetative growth from affecting yield.

4. Fertilizer and Water Management

When tubers are expanding, some regions are dry with little rain, while others are hot with abundant rain. These environments are unfavorable for sweet potato growth. In dry regions with little rain, water should be applied promptly to prevent premature aging of stems and leaves and to promote tuber expansion. In hot and rainy regions, drainage measures should be well implemented to prevent waterlogging and root rot or rapid tuber expansion, which is detrimental to quality. During expansion, tuber expansion agents and foliar fertilizers can be sprayed to promote nutrient transfer to the root tubers, accelerate nutrient accumulation, and produce an obvious yield-increasing effect.
