Causes of acute wilting in cotton after rain and control methods

Spring and summer are rainy seasons, and cotton plants are highly prone to acute wilting when the sky suddenly clears after rain, and in severe cases, plant death can occur, causing huge losses to cotton yield. So what causes acute wilting in cotton? How should it be controlled? Let's take a look together.

1. Soil oxygen deficiency

The rainy season very easily leads to waterlogging in the soil, resulting in poor soil permeability and, in severe cases, soil compaction, which reduces the oxygen content in the soil. When the roots receive insufficient oxygen, prolonged exposure will cause root asphyxiation and affect the normal absorption function of the root system. The longer the asphyxiation lasts, the more severely the root system is damaged, and the acute wilting phenomenon will appear.

Control measures: For cotton fields with standing water, drain the water promptly after rain. For cotton fields that have become waterlogged, loosen the soil in a timely manner to reduce the moisture of the surface soil, increase soil permeability, and ensure an adequate oxygen supply to the root system.

2. Improper fertilization

When too much fertilizer is applied at one time, the rain dissolves the fertilizer after the rain. However, because there is too much fertilizer, the concentration of the dissolved fertilizer solution becomes too high, which causes reverse osmosis in the cotton leaves and leads to rapid leaf wilting.

Control methods: Pay attention to the amount when fertilizing; a single fertilization should not be excessive. When leaf wilting appears, promptly carry out foliar fertilization. A mixed solution of 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate and 1%-2% urea can be sprayed once every week, for 2-3 consecutive times, which can effectively alleviate the wilting phenomenon.

3. Pests and diseases

The high-humidity environment after rain provides favorable conditions for the development of pests and diseases, and can very easily induce Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, mirid bugs and other pests and diseases. When they occur, they will cause acute wilting over large or small areas.

Control methods: After rain, first do a good job of drainage measures, then strengthen ventilation and reduce field humidity to avoid inducing pests and diseases. For fields where pests and diseases have occurred, handle them promptly and spray the corresponding pesticides for control to minimize losses. At the same time, use foliar fertilization to alleviate the wilting phenomenon so as not to affect yield.
