What should be noted when growing Asarum

Asarum, also called Chinese wild ginger (Asarum sieboldii), is a perennial herbaceous plant of the class Dicotyledonae and the genus Asarum. It has effects such as dispelling wind, dispelling cold and opening the orifices, and in medicine it is commonly used to treat diseases such as headache, sinusitis, toothache and rheumatic paralysis. Asarum cultivation in China is mainly distributed in the Northeast region, with Jilin and Liaoning as the main Asarum production areas. So today what the editor wants to share with you is the main points of Asarum cultivation, let's take a look together.

1. Soil selection

Wild Asarum generally grows mostly under forest, because the general forest soil is rich in humus and is suitable for Asarum growth, so when we cultivate it we can also choose to grow it under forest. If we choose to plant it in open fields, we should choose sandy loam with deep soil layers, rich in humus, loose in texture, sufficient fertilizer and convenient drainage and irrigation for planting. In particular, clay soil and nutrient-poor areas cannot be used for planting, otherwise diseases and pests will occur frequently, increasing the difficulty of cultivation, while the yield will not be high and the quality will be poor.

2. Planting time

The planting time of Asarum is related to its planting method. If fresh seeds are used for sowing, we usually start sowing in early July, and the sowing time must not be later than early August, because the longer the seeds are stored, the lower their germination rate. If freshly harvested seeds are sown, the germination rate is as high as over 96 percent, but if they are left for more than 60 days, the germination rate of the seeds is only 2 percent, so they should be sown as early as possible. If division propagation and rhizome propagation are used, generally it only needs to be planted in summer, with no excessive requirements.

3. Density management

Planting density has a great influence on the yield and quality of Asarum, and in later field operations a reasonable planting density also makes it convenient for growers to carry out field management work, which can also reduce the difficulty of labor. No matter which planting method is used, the row spacing for planting is generally 15 cm and the plant spacing is about 10 cm. Of course, we also need to reasonably regulate the planting density of Asarum according to the fertility level of the planting site, so as to increase the utilization rate of land resources as much as possible.

4. Water and fertilizer management

Water and fertilizer management is the key to high yield and high quality of Asarum. During the growth period of Asarum, in addition to base fertilizer, topdressing is also needed twice a year. The topdressing is in May and September each year respectively, mainly using ammonium sulfate for furrow application between rows. Of course, we can also mix fermented pig manure with superphosphate for fertilization, and it is said that the effect is also excellent. Also, during the planting process, we can cover the ground with a layer of decomposed fallen leaves, which can both provide nutrients and preserve fertilizer and water. Finally, in the dry season each year we should water reasonably to maintain soil moisture and promote the growth of Asarum, and at the same time remember to drain water in the rainy season.

In fact, there are still many points we need to pay attention to in Asarum cultivation, such as the precautions for intertillage and weeding, the adjustment of light intensity, overwintering protection measures, and the prevention and control measures for diseases and pests, etc. If you are interested, you can continue to follow us.
