Kansui Planting Techniques

Kansui, also known as Ganzé, Swollen-hand flower, Headache flower, and Cat's eye, is a perennial herbaceous plant unique to China, with the effects of draining water to reduce swelling and dispersing swelling and nodules. It has now been introduced and cultivated artificially, so how should it be planted? Let's take a look together.

1. Land selection and preparation

Kansui prefers a cool climate and has strong cold resistance. It is not strict about soil requirements and can grow in general soil, but it is best to plant it in sandy loam or clay loam with deep soil layers, loose and fertile soil, good drainage, and rich in humus. Deep plow 20-30 cm, apply base fertilizer according to the soil fertility status, rake finely and level, then make beds or ridges for planting.

2. Propagation methods

It can be propagated by seeds and root division. Seed propagation is generally carried out in mid-to-late July. Before sowing, soak the seeds in clean water for 2-3 days, changing the water once a day, then mix with plant ash and sow in holes or drills. For hole sowing, open holes at a spacing of 15×25 cm and sow; for drill sowing, open furrows on the bed or ridge surface at a row spacing of 20 cm, sow the seeds evenly into the furrows, cover with soil and water. Root division propagation is carried out in spring or autumn combined with harvest. Dig out the tubers of the plant, use the large ones for medicinal purposes and the small ones as seed. Open holes at a spacing of 15×25 cm, place the seed stems in them, with the stems exposed above the ground. Cover with soil and water.

3. Field management

For those using seed propagation, after emergence, thinning should be carried out together with cultivating and weeding, removing weak seedlings and diseased or pest-damaged seedlings, and keeping strong seedlings. At the same time, apply topdressing once with each weeding. In the early stage, thin human and animal manure water is suitable, and in the later stage, apply superphosphate. When loosening the soil, be careful not to go too deep, so as not to damage the root system of the seedlings. Water management is also extremely important. In drought, water in time to keep the soil moist and meet the needs of the plant. In the rainy season, drain in time to avoid root rot. After the aboveground part withers, apply barnyard manure or compost to help the root system overwinter. After the plant buds, except for those not kept for seed, remove the flower buds to reduce nutrient consumption, concentrate nutrients to supply the root system, and increase yield.

4. Pests and diseases

In summer high temperatures, leaf spot disease occurs and damages the leaves, and in severe cases causes the leaves to wither and reduces the plant's photosynthesis. Bordeaux mixture or captan can be sprayed to control the disease. Pests mainly include underground pests that gnaw on the rhizomes, mainly cutworms and mole crickets, which can be controlled by ordinary methods.
