Points to note when cultivating Yulan magnolia

What we generally call Xinyi is the Xinyi flower (Yulan magnolia flower), which is one type of traditional Chinese medicinal herb and was once banned from cultivation in ancient China. Xinyi is currently a very precious plant in China, with high technical difficulty in cultivation and low yield, so its economic value is high. At present, Xinyi is mainly distributed in Yunnan, Fujian, and Hubei in China. Today we will briefly look at several issues to note during the cultivation of Xinyi. Let's take a look together.

1. Soil

Yulan magnolia has the characteristics of liking light, liking fertilizer, liking moisture, not tolerating shade, and being cold-resistant. Generally, the planting site is chosen near a water source, with good drainage, deep soil layers, rich in organic matter, facing the sun, and with neutral soil or slightly acidic soil. Of course, the soil is best if it is loose on top and firm below with some sand mixed in, so that the soil has stronger fertilizer retention and water retention.

2. Methods

Because Yulan magnolia can be propagated by many methods, such as seed propagation, division propagation, layering propagation, and air layering, there are naturally some points to note when we use different planting methods. Seed propagation can generally be done in spring and autumn. Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked in warm water for three to four days, and sowing is done after the seeds split open. Division propagation is generally carried out in late winter and early spring, while layering is carried out in early spring. Air layering is different from layering and is generally carried out at the end of June each year.

3. Water

Yulan magnolia has a relatively large demand for water. Whether during the seedling stage or the growth period after planting out, we must manage water well. During seedling cultivation, we should water frequently, but control the amount of water, only needing to maintain humidity at about 40 percent. After planting out, it should also be watered frequently to keep the soil moist, which can promote the growth of new roots. But after Yulan magnolia survives planting, its demand for water decreases. If there is no drought weather, basically no watering is needed.

4. Pruning

During the growth period of young trees, we need to promote the growth of side branches, so we need to remove the terminal buds of Yulan magnolia to cultivate new branches and form a tree crown. At the same time, this also helps it bloom earlier and achieve early production. Second, after Yulan magnolia has been cultivated for three years, we should prune the branches and leaves that do not bear fruit to promote the growth of new branches, which helps the formation of flower buds. Also, remove old branches, dead branches, diseased and pest-damaged branches, and so on, which can also improve the yield and quality of Yulan magnolia.

Yulan magnolia can be said to be a very scarce traditional Chinese medicinal herb on the market today, and it is also one of the plants under state protection. So when planting it, we also need to note that relevant certificates and procedures must be handled, otherwise legal responsibility will be borne.
