Propagation Methods of Akebia

Akebia, also known as Mountain Tongcao, Wild Papaya, etc., is a deciduous woody vine. Its vine stems can be used as medicine, with diuretic and strangury-relieving, heart-clearing and vexation-removing, menstruation-promoting and lactation-inducing effects, and high medicinal value. Nowadays it is widely cultivated across the country, and how to propagate it before planting is an important matter. Follow the editor below to take a look at the detailed introduction.

1. Seed Propagation

In September-October when the fruits mature, pick the fruits, eat the flesh and keep the seeds for storage, preparing for autumn sowing. Before sowing, first rub and wash the seeds once with alkaline water, then rinse once with clean water, scoop them out and dry them. Choose a plot with deep soil, loose and fertile texture, and good drainage, and after land preparation use it as a seedbed. Evenly broadcast the treated seeds on the seedbed, cover with a thin layer of soil, then water to keep the soil moist. Seedlings will emerge before long, and after 1 year of cultivation they can be transplanted, but fruiting takes 3-4 years, which is time-consuming, so it is not commonly used in production.

2. Layering Propagation

Akebia's vine stems have strong sprouting ability. During the vine stem growth period, bury 1-2 year old branches and vines into the soil. To speed up rooting, make a wound at the tip of the branch and vine, and roots will form in about 1 month. When the root system grows to a certain extent, it can be separated from the mother plant and planted elsewhere. This method can be carried out all year round, and generally it can bloom and bear fruit in the second year after planting, so it is relatively commonly used in production.

3. Root Division Propagation

Root division propagation is generally carried out in early spring before sprouting. Dig out the plant with roots, divide it into several plants, and transplant them elsewhere. Generally, without cutting the branches and vines, transplanting in the same year can bear fruit in the same year.

4. Cutting Propagation

Cuttings can be carried out all year round. First select robust, pest- and disease-free 1-2 year old branches and vines from the mother plant as cuttings, and cut them into lengths of about 10 cm. Then insert them into the prepared seedbed, with the insertion depth at half or one third. Water frequently after cutting to keep the soil moist, and at the same time set up a shade net properly to facilitate rooting and survival. If conditions permit, soak the cuttings in rooting powder before cutting, and the survival rate can reach more than 95%.
