How to Grow Akebia Fruit: A Detailed Guide to Planting Methods and Key Techniques
Akebia fruit is a type of traditional Chinese medicinal herb, but many people are not familiar with it. It is the ripe fruit of Akebia trifoliata or Akebia quinata. It is currently mainly distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui in China, and has the effects of soothing the liver and regulating qi, promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, and promoting urination. It can be used to treat symptoms such as painful menstruation and amenorrhea, distending pain in the epigastrium and hypochondrium, and difficult urination. So do you know how to grow akebia fruit? Today, let's first take a quick look with the editor.

1. Land Selection and Preparation
Akebia fruit is best planted in loose sandy loam soil, and ideally in soil rich in nutrients and containing plenty of humus or organic matter. Secondly, akebia fruit is not cold-tolerant, so the planting site should be warm with good drainage, and it should avoid strong light, making it suitable for planting on shady slopes. Deeply plow the soil to at least about 20 cm, apply plenty of barnyard manure or compost, then plow the land again and mix the soil and fertilizer evenly. But note that the soil still needs to be turned over once more before planting; break up the clods fine, rake the soil level, and make raised beds about 1.5 m wide, then wait to plant.
2. Propagation Methods
There are four propagation methods for akebia fruit: seed propagation, layering propagation, root division propagation and cutting propagation. Seed propagation is generally carried out in September and October each year; root division propagation generally involves digging up roots from September to November each year for planting; layering propagation and cutting propagation can be done all year round. One drawback of seed propagation is that the seedling growth cycle is long and fruiting is late, so many growers do not like this method very much. Root division propagation generally can bear fruit in the same year after planting and grows quickly, making it currently the most popular planting method, but it requires a large amount of planting material, which increases planting costs, and this is also an issue worth considering.
3. Transplanting and Field Planting
Before akebia fruit is planted and established, it still needs a period of seedling cultivation. With seed propagation, we generally transplant in the second year, while with root division propagation, field planting can be done in the same year; with cutting propagation, transplanting can only be done after the seedlings from the cuttings have grown new roots; layering propagation is similar to cutting propagation, in that once the new plant has grown new roots, it can be planted as an individual plant. The row spacing for planting is generally 30 cm, and the plant spacing is about 20 cm.
4. Field Management
Akebia fruit is a plant with very strong resistance, so its field management is also very simple. After the akebia fruit seedlings are transplanted and established, we usually water them one week later, which can improve the survival rate of the seedlings. Secondly, during the growth of akebia fruit, attention should be paid to weeding so that nutrients are not absorbed by weeds and the growth rate of the seedlings is not affected. Also, when the akebia fruit seedlings grow new branches, we need to set up trellises and tie the vines to promote seedling growth, while also avoiding damage to akebia fruit from pests and diseases. Finally, there is topdressing management. When the base fertilizer is sufficient, topdressing is rarely needed, but if topdressing is required, it should also follow the principle of frequent application of thin fertilizer, mainly using farmyard manure, and not applying nitrogen fertilizer alone, so as to avoid excessive vegetative growth of the seedlings.
The above is the planting technique for akebia fruit. Here the editor has only briefly shared with everyone an overview of its planting process and planting methods.
