How to prevent early bolting in broccoli? These measures you need to know
Broccoli is a common vegetable with high planting returns, and it is widely grown across the country. However, during cultivation, early bolting can occur, which lowers the quality of broccoli and also severely affects yield. So what causes early bolting in broccoli? And how should it be prevented? Let's take a look.

I. Causes of bolting
Broccoli is a low-temperature long-day plant. During vernalization, its requirement for low temperature is not high, and it can sense low temperature after seed germination, but completing vernalization varies depending on the variety. For early-maturing varieties, vernalization generally begins when the seedling stem diameter is greater than 3.5 mm and the temperature is 10-17, and vernalization is completed after about 20 days; for mid-maturing varieties, when the seedling stem diameter reaches 10 mm, under a temperature of 5-10 degrees, vernalization is also completed in about 20 days; while late-maturing varieties require a stem diameter greater than 15 mm, and under a 2-5 degree environment need 50 days to complete vernalization. This period is relatively long. Once the temperature is too high, late-maturing varieties are very likely to complete vernalization early, resulting in bolting.
II. Preventive measures
1. Choose suitable varieties
Late-maturing varieties are very prone to early bolting, so when planting, try to choose early-maturing or mid-maturing varieties and select fewer late-maturing ones. When sowing, also choose a suitable time, and it should not be too early or too late.
2. Strengthen temperature control at the seedling stage
After sowing, the temperature should be controlled at 23-25 degrees. When the seedlings emerge, the temperature should be lowered slightly, maintained at 15-18 degrees during the day, not higher than 25 degrees, and not lower than 10 degrees at night. For early-maturing varieties, the seedling temperature should not be lower than 12 degrees for a long time, otherwise vernalization will occur early, causing early bolting later.
3. Strengthen wind ventilation
Broccoli grows vigorously and has a relatively high yield, so it consumes a large amount of nutrients and prefers fertilizer. Therefore, sufficient basal fertilizer should be applied before planting, and timely topdressing should be done during the growing period, ensuring sufficient fertilizer and water, so that high yield and high quality can be obtained. In addition, after transplanting, soil temperature should be protected. The daytime soil temperature is required to reach about 30 degrees, and at night it should not be lower than 18 degrees, which helps the seedlings recover.
