Detailed Explanation of Five-Clawed Dragon Planting Techniques and Management Methods
Five-clawed dragon, also known as foreign vine and palm-leaf morning glory, is a perennial twining herbaceous plant in the Convolvulaceae family and Ipomoea genus. Many people mistake it for crape myrtle or trumpet creeper, as they are all vine-type flowers and all parasitize other plants. It can be cultivated as an ornamental plant, and its rhizome can be used as medicine, with the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying. So how should it be planted? Let's find out together.

1. Site Selection and Land Preparation
It prefers warm and humid climate conditions and has strong adaptability to the environment. It is best cultivated in sandy loam or loam with deep soil layers, loose soil texture, and good drainage. After selecting the site, plow it multiple times in the autumn of the previous year to allow the soil to fully weather and mature, then after the ground thaws in the following spring, apply decomposed organic fertilizer as base fertilizer during plowing, at 1500-2500 kg per mu. After shaping and raking level, make beds and drainage ditches, and wait for planting.
2. Propagation Methods
Seed propagation is mostly used in production. Collect mature seeds in autumn from September to October, remove impurities, store them properly, and sow them in April of the following year. Using the hole sowing method, open holes on the bed surface at a spacing of 25×35 cm, mix the seeds evenly with plant ash and sow them in, cover with a layer of fine soil, and water. If the temperature is too low, a layer of rice straw or crop stalks can also be covered to keep warm and retain moisture, facilitating seedling emergence.
3. Field Management
After the seedlings emerge, promptly remove the covering straw, water appropriately to keep the soil moist to facilitate seedling growth. When the seedlings grow to 10-12 cm, thin and fill in seedlings in time, leaving 2-3 strong seedlings per hole. When the stems and vines of the plants grow to about 1 m, set up supports to allow them to twine and grow. During this period, it is best to carry out cultivation and weeding 3-4 times per year. In spring and summer, apply human and livestock manure as topdressing to promote plant growth, and in winter, apply barnyard manure, compost, or cake fertilizer to help them overwinter.
4. Pest and Disease Control
Five-clawed dragon has strong environmental adaptability and few pests and diseases. It is mainly harmed by rust disease and powdery mildew, which mainly occur in spring and summer. Both diseases mainly damage the stems and leaves of the plants, and in severe cases can cause the plants to wither and die. For rust disease, triadimefon can be sprayed for control when it occurs; for powdery mildew, carbendazim, thiram, chlorothalonil, and other agents can be sprayed for control.
