Planting Techniques of Gouji

Gouji (Cibotium barometz), also known as Golden Hair Dog Fern, is a plant of the family Dicksoniaceae. Its rhizome can be used as medicine, with the effects of warming and nourishing the liver and kidneys and dispelling wind-dampness. It mainly treats rheumatic bone pain, waist and leg pain, numbness of the hands and feet, and stiffness of the sinews and vessels. So how should Gouji be planted? Let's learn about it together with the editor.

1. Site Selection and Land Preparation

Gouji mostly grows wild beside mountain valleys and streams or in shady, damp places under forests. It prefers a cool and humid environment and avoids strong direct sunlight. If the light intensity is relatively high, its growth will be extremely slow, and over time it will gradually wither and die. Therefore, when planting, it is suitable to choose a humus-rich, moist mountain gully or valley for cultivation, and the soil should preferably be acidic. After selecting the site, level and rake it flat. If conditions permit, disinfection treatment can be carried out, and then decomposed farmyard manure is applied as base fertilizer. Drainage ditches should be made for irrigation and drainage.

2. Propagation Method

The propagation method of Gouji is division, generally carried out in early spring. Dig out the plant's rhizome and cut it crosswise into 2-3 segments, each segment required to have a certain number of adventitious roots and leaves. After cutting, apply plant ash to the cut surfaces to prevent pathogen invasion, then open holes in the plot at a spacing of 35×35 cm between plants and rows, and transplant one cut rhizome segment per hole, cover with soil, firm it, and water. After planting, shading should be the main focus, keeping warm and increasing humidity, and generally buds will emerge after 10-20 days.

3. Field Management

After planting, cultivation and weeding should be done well, generally 3-4 times per year. During cultivation, attention should be paid because the root system of Gouji grows horizontally upward, so cultivation should be shallow rather than deep to avoid damaging the rhizome. Gouji is a plant that prefers shade and humidity, so during drought it should be watered in time, and it should also be watered frequently under normal conditions to keep the soil moist. When cultivated in the open air, shading from the sun is also needed, and a shading degree of about 60% is appropriate. To obtain high yield, fertilization is essential. Topdressing can be applied 4 times per year. In spring and summer, nitrogen fertilizers such as urea should be the main type, while in autumn and winter, organic fertilizers such as farmyard manure should be the main type.

4. Pest and Disease Control

Gouji is originally a wild plant with strong vitality and extremely strong environmental adaptability, so there are basically no diseases during cultivation. The main pests are armyworms and cabbage loopers, which gnaw on tender buds and tender leaves in spring and summer, and can be controlled by spraying dichlorvos.
