The correct method for broadcasting compound fertilizer during the rice stem elongation stage

During the rice stem elongation stage, topdressing is generally carried out 1 to 2 times. In previous years we used urea, but this year we switched to a high-tower granulated fertilizer. This is a compound fertilizer with high nitrogen and low phosphorus and potassium. The fertilizer granules are round and smooth on the outside, with holes inside, and have a relatively low specific gravity. Before fertilizing, we first drained the flooded water, then broadcast the compound fertilizer granules on the soil surface, and immediately let water back into the field. After the water layer was full, we found that some fertilizer granules appeared on the water surface. These floating granules were blown to one side by the wind, and some stayed in the sheltered corners.

We are somewhat worried and do not know whether this will affect the effectiveness of the fertilizer application.

The reporter interviewed a rice expert from the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences on this issue. The expert pointed out: compound fertilizer floating on the water surface in paddy fields will affect rice plants in two ways. First, it is not conducive to root absorption. Rice roots are mainly distributed in the soil layer, while the fertilizer floats on the water surface; this spatial mismatch will affect root absorption and the exertion of fertilizer efficiency. Second, the fertilizer granules floating on the water surface are scattered by the wind and then gather again, and then dissolve on the spot, causing uneven fertilization, making the rice plant population uneven and affecting fertilizer efficiency. In order to avoid floating fertilizer granules on the water surface after fertilizing paddy fields, it is essential to ensure that fertilization is done properly. Both compound fertilizer and granular nitrogen fertilizer should be applied below the soil surface, so that the fertilizer and soil are mixed and covered with soil before irrigation.
