Five things to note when introducing potatoes
Most seed potatoes are shipped in from other places, which is in fact a form of introduction. When ordering and buying seed potatoes, you need to understand factors such as the latitude, altitude and climatic conditions of the seed potato production area, and correctly choose the production area and variety according to the rules of potato introduction.
Pay attention to latitude and altitude. Introduction from high altitude to low altitude and from high latitude to low latitude is likely to succeed. The reason is that during the growing period of potatoes at high altitude and high latitude, the temperature is lower, the seed potato stems are less infected with viruses and degenerate slowly; when introduced to low altitude and low latitude for planting, they generally perform well and the success rate is high.
Pay attention to climatic conditions. When introducing from a distant place, you need to see whether the climatic conditions of the introduction site and the production area are close, that is, whether the climate of the two places is similar in the same season or whether the climate of the two places is similar in different seasons. For example, the winter in the south and the summer in the north have similarities, with similar temperatures and not much difference in rainfall. In this way, the introduced variety is more likely to succeed.
Pay attention to the growth period of the variety. Potatoes like light and are sensitive to light. When introduced from a long-day area to a short-day area, they often do not flower, but this does not affect the growth of underground tubers too much; while short-day varieties introduced to a long-day area sometimes do not form tubers. Temperature has a great influence on potato growth: especially during the tuber formation stage, if the soil temperature exceeds 25°C, the tubers will basically stop growing. Therefore, when introducing, you must pay attention to the length of the variety's growth period, especially when the south introduces from the north, you must introduce early-maturing and early-to-mid-maturing varieties, and strive to harvest before the temperature rises.
