Recently, researchers at Harbin Institute of Technology have made encouraging progress in research on using discarded potato waste to produce single-cell protein feed. The researchers not only screened out an excellent combination of bacterial strains for producing cell protein, but also designed and formulated a complete process route for producing single-cell protein feed from potato waste. The use of potato waste with juice for liquid fermentation to produce cell protein is the first proposal and application of its kind both domestically and internationally. China produces more than 70 million tons of potatoes annually, and more than 3.4 million tons of potato waste remain after starch processing.

China produces more than 70 million tons of potatoes annually, and more than 3.4 million tons of potato waste remain after starch processing. Potato waste is rich in cellulose, hemicellulose and crude protein substances, with a complete amino acid composition. The crude protein content in microbial protein reaches as high as 40%-50%, has a good effect on promoting livestock and poultry growth, and is superior in biological value to plant protein feed. Due to the lack of scientific and effective treatment technology, a large amount of potato waste resources cannot be effectively utilized. The potato waste and wastewater generated during starch production are discharged at will, also causing serious environmental pollution.

Under the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Science and Technology Support Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Professor Yang Qian of the Institute of Bioengineering at Harbin Institute of Technology began leading a research group in 2004 to carry out preliminary research on producing single-cell protein feed from potato waste. Using discarded potato waste from potato starch processing as the main raw material, and using yeast and others to prepare microbial agents, through screening and combining schemes for single-cell protein-producing strains, they successively obtained 8 highly efficient strains suitable for producing single-cell protein. Through pilot tests, they determined the optimal fermentation process conditions for producing single-cell protein, and formulated a complete process route for producing single-cell protein feed from potato waste. The product was tested by an authoritative department and fully met the relevant requirements, laying a solid foundation for industrialization of the results.

This research result has currently applied for two national @#@78@#@, and cooperation agreements have been signed with several large potato processing enterprises, with optimistic prospects for industrialization.
