Recently, researchers at Harbin Institute of Technology have made encouraging progress in research on using discarded potato pulp to produce single-cell protein feed. The researchers not only screened out an excellent strain combination for producing cell protein, but also designed and formulated a complete process route for producing single-cell protein feed from potato pulp. Adding juice to the pulp and using liquid fermentation to produce cell protein is the first proposal and application of its kind both in China and abroad.

China produces more than 70 million tons of potatoes annually, and starch processing leaves behind more than 3.4 million tons of potato pulp. The pulp is rich in cellulose, hemicellulose and crude protein substances, with a complete amino acid profile. The crude protein content in the microbial protein reaches as high as 40%-50%, has a good effect on promoting livestock and poultry growth, and is biologically superior to plant protein feed. Due to the lack of scientific and effective processing technology, a large amount of potato pulp resources cannot be effectively utilized, and the pulp and wastewater generated during starch production are discharged at will, also causing serious pollution to the environment.

Professor Yang Qian of the Institute of Bioengineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, with support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Science and Technology Support Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, began leading a research group in 2004 to carry out preliminary research on producing single-cell protein feed from potato pulp. Using discarded potato pulp from potato starch processing as the main raw material and preparing microbial agents with yeast and other microorganisms, through screening and combination schemes for single-cell protein-producing strains, they successively obtained 8 efficient strains suitable for producing single-cell protein, determined the optimal fermentation process conditions for producing single-cell protein through pilot-scale tests, and formulated a complete process route for producing single-cell protein feed from potato pulp. The products were tested by an authoritative department and fully met the relevant requirements, laying a solid foundation for the industrialization of the results.

This research result has currently applied for two national @#@78@#@, and cooperation agreements have been signed with several large potato processing enterprises, with optimistic prospects for industrialization.
