Characteristics and Cultivation Introduction of the Lvyuanzhan Rice Variety
Lvyuanzhan is a new dual-purpose (early and late season) variety bred by the Rice Research Institute of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences through crossing Lvzhenzhan 8 with Sanyuan 92. In the 1997 late-season provincial regional trial (high-quality grain group), it yielded 375.86 kg per mu, a 2.93% increase over the control Jingxian 89, with a maturity period comparable to Jingxian 89. It was retested in the 1998 provincial regional trial. In 1996-1997, it was trial-planted on a small scale in Guangzhou, Shanwei, Zhaoqing and Yunfu, yielding 425-450 kg per mu in low-to-medium fertility areas and around 500 kg per mu in medium-to-high fertility areas, with the highest yield reaching 600 kg.
The resistance frequency of Lvyuanzhan to rice blast is 88.1% for group B, 100% for group C, and 75.4% for all groups, showing good field resistance. Its resistance grade to bacterial leaf blight is grade 4. This variety has a good plant type, a plant height of 92.6 cm, medium tillering ability, thick and sturdy stems, and moderate flag leaves. The panicle length is 20.2 cm, and the panicles are relatively large. In the late stage it possesses the stress resistance of a late-season rice variety, with good grain filling and ripening color. This variety has a rich genetic basis and wide adaptability. Its rice quality is grade one, and the cooked rice has good mouthfeel and eating quality.
Cultivation key points: (1) Sow sparsely to raise strong seedlings; the seedling age for early-season rice is about 30 days, and 18-20 days for the reversed-autumn crop is optimal. (2) Spacing of 6X5 (square cun), with 3 seedlings per hill. (3) Apply mid-season fertilizer appropriately and heavily to give full play to the advantages of large panicles and more grains. (4) Pay attention to the prevention and control of pests and diseases.
