Detailed Guide to Propagating Purple Velvet Tradescantia: You'll Get It at a Glance
[Propagation Method] Cuttings are the usual method of propagation. In spring and autumn, select 10cm-long stem sections; each cutting should have one or two leaves and be inserted into a mixed substrate of peat and sand. Several cuttings can be inserted into one pot. Water thoroughly the first time, cover well with plastic film, and place in bright light. After that, simply mist the leaves once or twice a day depending on how dry or moist they are; too much moisture easily causes rot, and roots form in about 2--3 weeks. The water-culture method can also be used, but make sure the water temperature is higher than the air temperature; roots will form after a few weeks.
[Cultivation Management] It requires ample light all year round, but in summer avoid direct sunlight; a south-facing window in the room is the best spot.
Strong light will scorch the leaves: at first they turn slightly white, and soon after they blacken, showing a dehydrated, dry state. Conversely, with insufficient light the purple fuzz on the surface fades and the leaf color becomes dull. For the growing medium, generally mix garden soil, peat soil and leaf mold in a 2:1:1 ratio. During the growing season, follow the watering principle of preferring moist over dry; once the soil dries out completely, the leaves wilt and droop, and at that point you must water or mist immediately to encourage them to recover and grow firm again. Never spray water directly onto the leaf surface, or colored spots will appear. If the leaf fuzz stays wet for a long time, the leaves very easily deteriorate and rot. In winter keep a moderate amount of water, otherwise the branches become soft and bent. Maintain a relative humidity of 50%-60%. During the growing season, fertilize once a week; do not use too much nitrogen fertilizer, as this causes leggy growth and faded leaf color, so use more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. When fertilizing, note two things: first, the fertilizer must not touch the leaves; second, after fertilizing, keep the potting soil somewhat dry, so the leaves are thick and strong and the purple color is deeper. When it blooms in spring and summer, the flowers give off an unpleasant odor, so you can cut off the entire inflorescence. Repot once a year. Because the plant grows quickly, pay attention to pruning and renewal; it can be shaped into a ball, a cliff style, a slope style and so on to add beauty. For overwintering, wrap the plant well in paper, tie it up, then cover it with a plastic bag, tie it at the pot rim, and place it indoors. The plant rots easily after being chilled.
