What are the control methods for the white-backed planthopper on rice?
Scientific name Sogatella furcifera (Horvath), belonging to the order Homoptera, family Delphacidae. Distributed in the water bamboo and rice-growing areas of China.
Hosts include rice, water bamboo, corn, barley, @#@245@#@, sugarcane, sorghum, barnyardgrass, bluegrass, and others.
Damage characteristics are the same as those of the brown planthopper.
Morphological features: macropterous male body length 3.2-3.8 mm, light yellow, with dark brown spots. Vertex projecting forward; on the outer side of the lateral carinae of the pronotum and mesonotum, behind the compound eyes, there is 1 crescent-shaped dark brown spot; the lateral area of the mesonotum is dark brown, with a yellow longitudinal band in the middle; the forewings are semitransparent, with brownish halo spots at the tip; the wing veins, face, thorax, and ventral surface of the abdomen are dark brown. Macropterous female body length 4-4.5 mm, mostly yellowish white, with light brown spots. Eggs are crescent-shaped, 0.7-0.8 mm long. Nymphs have 5 instars in total; the final-instar nymph is grayish white, about 2.9 mm long.
Life habits: in ** and Ningxia, 1-2 generations per year; in the Northeast, 2-3 generations; south of the Huai River, 3-4 generations; in the Yangtze River basin, 4-7 generations; south of the Nanling Mountains, 7-10 generations; southern Hainan, 11 generations. It is a migratory pest. The initial source of the insects migrates from the south. The migration period is delayed from south to north, and generations overlap. The macropterous adults have strong flight ability, and each female lays about 85 eggs. When the field population increases about 2-4 times per generation, the insects migrate and disperse once the field population density is high.
Control methods: (1) Select insect-resistant varieties resistant to the white-backed planthopper, such as Gan Zao Xiu No. 42. (2) For other methods, see the brown planthopper.
