Breeding institution: Northern Agricultural Technology Development Corporation.

Approval status: Approved by the Crop Variety Approval Committee of Liaoning Province, and approved by the National Crop Variety Approval Committee in 1999.

Variety approval number: Guoshendao 990002.

Variety source: Selected from the Liaojing No. 5 line.

Characteristics: Seedlings robust, root system well developed, plant type compact, stems tough, plant height about 90 cm, main stem with 15 leaves, leaves erect and short, wide, and thick, leaf color relatively dark, high light energy utilization rate; panicle club-shaped, semi-compact panicle type, panicle length 15-18 cm, about 100 filled grains per panicle, seed setting rate about 90%, 1000-grain weight about 24 g, grains oblong, awnless. Seed coat yellow, glume tip brown. Brown rice rate 82.23%, milled rice rate 7417%, head rice rate 70.30%, length-to-width ratio 1.6, gel consistency 100 mm, endosperm waxy, amylose content 0, protein 9.10%. The growth period in Liaoning is about 153 days, belonging to the Qiuguang maturity group; high and stable yield, strong stress resistance, strong tillering ability, high panicle-bearing rate, effective tillering about 70%; moderately resistant to rice blast, susceptible to rice false smut under high-fertility conditions, with characteristics such as lodging resistance, drought tolerance, cold tolerance, and green-stem maturity without premature senescence. In the 1996-1997 northern regional trial, the two-year average yield was 481 kg per mu, an increase of 9.31% over the control Zhongdan No. 2. In the 1995-1996 Liaoning Province production trial, the two-year average was 668.8 kg, an increase of 24.2% over the control Liaonuo No. 1. In the 1998 northern rice region production trial, the average yield was 510.0 kg per mu, an increase of 3.6% over the local control average.

Cultivation points: For medium-fertility fields, 29.7 cm X 19.8 or 23.1 cm, with 3-4 seedlings per hill; for high-fertility fields, 29.7 cm X 26.4 cm or 29.7 cm, with 4-5 seedlings per hill. Apply 60-75 kg of ammonium sulfate and 50-60 kg of phosphate fertilizer per mu, together with potassium, silicon, zinc, and various other micronutrients. Water management should adhere to combining deep, shallow, and dry conditions; in the later stage, water should be managed by intermittent irrigation, and water should be withdrawn 10 days before harvest to ensure green-stem harvest. Before sowing, seed disinfection should be done well to prevent bakanae disease.

Suitable range: Promoted for planting in the medium-early japonica medium-maturity and late-maturity rice regions of Liaoning, North China, and Northwest China.
