Detailed Explanation of Schisandra Seedling Raising Methods and Technical Points

For Schisandra seedling raising, there are generally several methods such as sowing and seedling raising (seedlings), cuttings and layering, because there are currently relatively few excellent varieties, and seedlings for production are still mainly seedlings. The following focuses on the cultivation method of seedlings. 1. Seed treatment: At the end of September, select fruits with large spikes, many seeds, and uniform size, soak them in clean water for 2~3 hours, rub off the flesh, pick out inferior seeds, remove and dry them, then mix the cleaned plump seeds evenly with three times the amount of fine sand, choose a wind-sheltered and sunny place and dig

For Schisandra seedling raising, there are generally several methods such as sowing and seedling raising (seedlings), cuttings and layering, because there are currently relatively few excellent varieties, and seedlings for production are still mainly seedlings. The following focuses on the cultivation method of seedlings.

1. Seed treatment: At the end of September, select fruits with large spikes, many seeds, and uniform size, soak them in clean water for 2~3 hours, rub off the flesh, pick out inferior seeds, remove and dry them, then mix the cleaned plump seeds evenly with three times the amount of fine sand, choose a wind-sheltered and sunny place and dig a 60~70 cm deep pit, put the seeds mixed with fine sand into cloth bags or gunny bags, bury them in the pit, and carry out freezing treatment. After the thaw in the spring of the second year (around mid-March in the north), dig out the seeds and place them at 20°C~22°C for germination. When 70%~80% of the seeds have slightly cracked and the radicle has just emerged from the seed coat, it is the best time to sow.

2. Sowing and seedling raising: Sowing can be done in early April. Choose a well-drained, fertile, flat and sunny place, apply sufficient base fertilizer, level and preserve soil moisture, and make a 1.2 m wide seedbed. For ease of management, drilling with a row spacing of 15~18 cm is preferred. After sowing, cover with 2~2.5 cm of soil, press lightly, cover with grass and water to prevent drought. The sowing rate per 667 sq m is about 5 kg. After sowing, seedlings can emerge in 20~30 hours. At this time, remove the grass curtains in batches, set up a simple shade shed, and appropriately apply additional fertilizer, irrigate, and loosen the soil.
